Buffalo 3 Syracuse 2
• Espino (L, 2-2) 6IP, 6H, 3R, 3ER, 2BB, 6K, HR
• Grace 1IP, 1H, 0R, 0BB, 2K
• Turner 2-5, R, 3K
• Martinson 2-4, 2B, 2RBI

Paolo Espino made but one mistake — a three-run HR to Buffalo’s Caleb Gindl in the 2nd — but it was enough for Syracuse to lose, 3-2. The Venezuelan veteran gave up six hits total, walked two, and struck out six over six innings. Matt Grace and Evan Meek both turned in a scoreless inning to keep the game close. Jason Martinson — Syracuse’s representative at the 2015 I.L. All-Star Game — doubled in both Chiefs runs in the 3rd and went 2-for-4 overall to lead the offense.
Roster move: RHP Paul Demny reassigned from Harrisburg; RHP A.J. Cole placed on the 7-Day DL, retroactive to June 30.

Richmond 2 Harrisburg 0
• Voth 6IP, 5H, 0R, 3BB, 5K
• Suero (L, 0-1) 3IP, 3H, 2R, 2ER, BB, 3K, HR
• Difo 2-4
• Pleffner 1-3, 2B

Harrisburg’s bid for a ninth straight win fell short when Richmond went deep in the 9th for 2-0 victory. Wander Suero served up a two-run shot with one down in his third inning of relief to suffer the loss. Austin Voth tossed six scoreless innings, allowing five hits and three walks while setting down five on strikes in his seventh no-decision. Wilmer Difo singled twice, Shawn Pleffner doubled once, but the rest of the lineup was hitless with pinch-hitter Jose Lozada accounting for the fourth Senators hit.
Roster move: RHP Wander Suero reassigned from Potomac.

Frederick 4 Potomac 3
• Lopez 7IP, 5H, 2R, 2ER, 0BB, 7K
• Self (BS, 1; L, 2-2) 1IP, 3H, 2R, 2ER, 0BB, 0K, HR
• Keller 2-3, R, 2B
• Wooten 1-3, R, BB, HR, RBI

Potomac’s more modest streak of four wins was also stopped last night as Frederick rallied for two in the 8th for a 4-3 win. Reynaldo Lopez turned in his best outing of the season with seven innings of two-run ball on five hits and no walks while striking out seven. Derek Self took the loss as let in the deciding runs on three hits, including a HR. Alec Keller singled, doubled, and scored a run while John Wooten launched his 5th big fly to pace the P-Nats attack.
Roster move: RHP Ian Dickson activated from the 7-Day DL.

Hagerstown 5 Greensboro 0
• Bach (W, 2-1) 6IP, 2H, 0R, 3BB, 8K, 2PO at 1B
• Cooper (SV, 1) 3IP, 0H, 0R, 0BB, 2K, HBP
• Abreu 4-4, 2R, 2B, SB(20)
• Mejia 2-4, R, HR, 3RBI, 2K
• Carey 1-2, R, 2BB, HR, RBI, SB

The tables were turned at the Muni as the Suns blanked the Grasshoppers, 5-0. Connor Bach and Andrew Cooper combined on the two-hit shutout, with Bach giving up both Greensboro hits and three walks over the first six innings for the win, and Cooper closing it out with just a hit batsman over the final three. Osvaldo Abreu went 4-for-4 with a double to lead the Suns hit column while Bryan Mejia and D.K. Carey both homered to account for the final four Hagerstown runs.

Williamsport 6 Auburn 1
• J. Rodriguez (L, 0-2) 5IP, 9H, 5R, 4ER, 2BB, 4K, HR
• Mooney 2IP, 1H, 0R, BB, K
• Sagdal 1-3, RBI
• Reetz 0-3, 2K, PB, E

The Crosscutters scored in four of the first five innings en route to a 6-1 victory over the Doubledays. Starter and loser Jefry Rodriguez was knocked around for five runs (four earned) over that stretch on nine hits and two walks while striking out four as he lost for the second time for Auburn and seventh time in 2015. Ian Sagdal drove in the lone Auburn run as the Doubledays were held to just three hits and three walks total.

Any of our Hagerstown folks have a scouting report on Connor Bach? He seems to be showing a lot of promise for a 21st rounder. He’s a big lefty from Centerville HS by way of VMI. It’s also good to see another strong start by Voth and one of the best thus far this year from Lopez.

I know it’s way to early to write him off, but i was really expecting a bigger year from Drew Ward than the one he is having. BA now down to .236 with just 3 homers. I guess it’s gonna be a much slower progression path for him than i thought. Anyone have any insights on the struggles he is having? Just a bump in the road?

Nick I have a story for you: there once was a Canadien
Outfielder in late 80s who stalled with his hitting
In AAÀ despite much attention from hitting coach, Leron
Lee. But the one aspect of his game he never let up
On was his one handed grab of a carom off the
Legendary brick OF wall @ Busch Stadium .
The guys name. Larry Walker. You know the rest of the story
As Paul Harvey would say. Lol.
I envision Drew as a nice LH bat asset in future
Nats roster as a companion bat to Harper,

I hope you’re right Jeff about Ward. I just thought he would be mashing by now because of his size, but I guess that’s the last tool to develop. Great story about Walker. Saw him many times at the Big O as i lived about 20 minutes from there. I remember when he first started out he would often chase balls in the dirt. Once he learned to lay off them, he took off and became a true five tool player. Was a joy to watch and a nice guy to boot.

Evidenced by tonight. Drew Ward just needs more
Ducks on the pond to get fired up and rake.
Nice rally by Potnats in FRED tonight.
Keller is continuing his impressive progression

Nick – I’m disappointed too. I can’t quite put my finger on it (and that in and of itself scares me too)… is it that Ward strikes out so much, that his fielding is so uneven, that he can only outrun one or two people in a P-Nats uniform, including coaches?

      1. Jeff says:
        July 4, 2015 at 12:42 am

Sounds like LF for Ward. Granted he is still a kid
Who would be a junior @ NCAA program

Several QS last night on farm .
    Bach is a nice story

    Ward? Still young.
    Woodbridge big park dimensions
Carolina League not a hitters league

Ryan Sullivan knows Bach and was high on him when drafted. He obviously needs to cut his walks but he obviously can strike low A hitters out when on.

Speaking of locals, welcome to professional baseball, Kevin Mooney. Good to have a Terp in the system.

Thanks for the heads-up guys on Bach. Didn’t even notice him till now. Here we are talking about a 15th rounder & a 21st rounder….seamhead delight! 🙂

Since half of the fun is talking about folks who are not yet on everyone’s lips (Victor Robles is already passe!), or who are young enough to think bigger (Ward) let me nominate Osvaldo Abreu. He is only 21 and has stepped up his offense like Difo’s big leap last year. Huge quantum leap, lots of extra base hits, huge improvement in plate selectivity and leads the organization in stolen bases. If they can get him better on defense, the Nats have a very interesting prospect developing in Hagerstown. Jeff, what did you see in him when you watched him in person?

Gil, the fun during my VC was sitting in GA
Watching masters and Abreau pick up the middle .
Abreau has some RF sock for a future cool UTL
    Guy.
Gil, the theme in harrisburg is why guys like
Skole only have 11 HRs in the ban box!
Keyes took advantage of those dimensions .
Still awaiting Jeff Gardner to go yard more.
PotomAc is such an odd dimensioned community
    Park .

  9. Jeff says:
    July 3, 2015 at 2:38 pm

Abreau also seems to have more room to add
    Bulk.
I saw a few hairs pop out with white sox signing
Fernando Tatis, Jr. whose dad I recall rooting
For with Expos in Torborg time .
I am glad Kinery is with Anderson who loves
    Odd platoons .
Matthew Page may stay in auburn , Gil, if
Your accessment of Wiseman is spot on.
No word on W Ky draftee signing ??

  10. forensicane says:
    July 3, 2015 at 3:42 pm

W Ky signed but in in Viera to get himself in shape. Has sock, needs wheels.

Great Larry Walker story. Another one that got away. These are great years for those of us tormented by being die hard Expos fans.

    Isn’t Fernando Sr. still playing?

Skole still has a way to go. But it’s early. Hopefully he will not go the route of Cliff Floyd in a similar injury.

    1. Jeff says:
      July 3, 2015 at 8:20 pm

Interesting that Nats did not purchase Jake
Skole off Texas to play some AA!

  11. Jeff says:
    July 3, 2015 at 6:25 pm

    Tatis in jersey ??
You know if Nats won 96 one year. Imagine
Expos 94 @ finish line when butch Henry
Was pitching like tom glavine. Especially that
Gem in LA in espn in August. (??).
Wheels or no wheels we just need lumber
In the lower minors. Page is hitting good @ auburn.
Eusebio and his magic bat in hags.
Yezzo in potomAc has truly flattened out. DL too.
Odd that Nats drafted LaBruna out of USC
As switch hitter and then made him exclusively
Righty. Maybe in time that changes.
