Syracuse 2 Charlotte 1
• Espino (W, 2-0) 7IP, 5H, 1R, 0ER, 2BB, 6K
• Martin (SV, 3) 1IP, 0H, 0R, 0BB, 3K
• Lisson 2-2, R, BB
• Mastroianni 2-3, 2-2B, SF, 2RBI, SB
Darin Mastroianni delivered the both RBIs while Paolo Espino turned in another strong start as the Chiefs edged the Knights, 2-1. Mastroianni went 2-for-3 overall with an RBI double in the 5th and a sacrifice fly in the 7th. Espino allowed just an unearned run on five hits and two walks over seven innings for his second AAA win. After a Cordero-esque 8th by Eric Fornataro, Rafael Martin struck out the side in the 9th for a three-up, three-down save, his third of the season.
OF-1B Kevin Keyes was named the I.L. Batter of the Week for June 15-21.
Harrisburg 7 Altoona 2 — GAME ONE
• Bates (W, 3-0) 6⅓ IP, 4H, 2R, 2ER, BB, K
• Harper ⅔ IP, 0H, 0R, 0BB, 0K, 1-1 IR-S
• Goodwin 3-4, 3R, 3B, RBI
• Vettleson 3-3, 3R, 3B, BB, RBI
Harrisburg broke out for three in the 1st and cruised to a 7-2 win in the opener. Colin Bates pitched into the 7th but lost the shutout bid after a pair of extra-base hits with one out plated the first Altoona run. Bryan Harper got two groundouts to finish the game. Brian Goodwin and Drew Vettleson combined for six hits and six runs scored to lead the Sens 12-hit attack.
Altoona 4 Harrisburg 3 — GAME TWO
• Simmons (L, 3-4) 4IP, 3H, 2R, 2ER, 2BB, 3K, HBP
• Mendez 2IP, 2H, 2R, 0ER, 0BB, 0K
• Lozada 2-3, R
• Difo 2-4, RBI
A single, error, and a double with two outs in the 6th plated the unearned but decisive runs as the Senators lost the nightcap, 4-3. James Simmons started and gave up two runs on three hits and two walks over four innings for the loss. Wilmer Difo went 2-for-4 with an RBI single but was caught stealing in the top of the 7th trying to get into scoring position with one out for pinch-hitter Brian Goodwin, who delivered a single that scored the final Harrisburg run.
Potomac — ALL STAR GAME
The California-Carolina League All-Star game in on the left coast this season, with the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes playing host. Spencer Kieboom is candidate to start behind the plate while Nick Pivetta is a possibility for an inning. Potomac manager Tripp Keister is leading the Carolina contingent.
Hagerstown — ALL STAR BREAK
Tonight the Sally League All-Star game will be held in Asheville, NC. RHPs Austen Williams, Drew Van Orden, and IF Grant DeBruin are on the Northern division roster and will most likely appear in reserve roles.
State College 6 Auburn 2
• Crownover (L, 0-1) 2IP, 3H, 2R, 2ER, 0BB, 2K, HR
• Gunter 2IP, 0H, 0R, 2BB, 3K, WP
• Mejia 3-5, R, 2-2B, RBI
• Keniry 3-5, RBI
State College scored five times before Auburn could answer as they dropped their first decision, 6-2. Washington’s 2015 6th Rd. pick Matt Crownover lost his pro debut as he gave up a two-run HR in his second and final inning of work and three hits total while striking out two and walking none. Offensively, the Doubledays racked up 13 hits with tablesetters Bryan Mejia and Conor Keniry both going 3-for-5 with an RBI, but the clutch hit was elusive as Auburn left on 11 men and hit into two double plays. Cody Gunter made his debut as a pitcher in the 7th and pitched two scoreless innings as he walked two and struck out three.
Roster moves: LHPs Grant Borne, Matthew Crownover, RHP Mariano Rivera Jr. assigned from Washington.
And the GCL baby nats won their season opener yesterday, 14-1. Lots of graduates from the DSL Nats of last year. Box score here:
http://www.milb.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?gid=2015_06_22_natrok_carrok_1&t=g_box&sid=milb
with Gunter making the conversion it’s like having a whole new prospect to follow
Anybody know why Brian Langlois is still in XST?
Injury no doubt .
Interesting how last year’s draft is a companion
Draft to this year’s . Reetz drafted last year. This
Year Nats only drafted one catcher from Rizzo’s
Favorite school- Rice.
Three or four lefties drafted and signed (14)
And (15).
Glad to see Melvin Rodrieguez signed and a name
George Carlin would love A LaBruna. ( youtube
His skit about names TODD) .
Scalp the Braves this week, boys! Let’s drive to
That ten game lead.
Interesting , Gil Grissom, if DeBruin and Wooten
are part of a duel promotion . Suns could use
W Rodrieguez for his defense again. Why not try
Page @1b Nats if Jose M goes to potomAc second
Half. Yezzo is not hitting like most of Carolina league.
Maybe Eusebio can gain a hagerstown cup of coffee,
Gil Grissom??
3b11. Gunther is a tall drink of water from Texas.
Text book eye brow raiser for any scout .
Plus he can hit vs NL affiliates. Lol!
A few points…there is an obvious shortseason glut at OF-1B of folks who have to prove they can handle low A ball even before Stevenson and Wiseman enter the system. That was the huge strength at DSL in 2014. So GCL 2015 is the convergence of holdovers from GCL 2014 (including Ramirez, who was promoted from DSL midseason), and DSL graduates who already aced the Dominican. All you need to do is look at the box score from yesterday to see Augustin and Mota have to come off the bench and Pimentel unable to get in the game.
So the early weeks of the season will establish who earns the push this year to Auburn, which will happen even without Stevenson and Wiseman. There are too many players who need to play every day.
Once those two SEC talents come around, it’s a question of who earns the bumps from Auburn to Hagerstown. Right now, Keller is the only OF who could realistically get a promotion to Potomac. Maybe Orange does, and bumps Wooten, who can play multiple positions. If Keller goes to Potomac, might they leap Wiseman to Hagerstown like they did Keller?
It’s OF-IB-2B-SS-C-SP-RP king of the hill in the lowest minors this year, and will make it very fun to follow. The prospect lists will totally turn over and we’ll know new names next year just as we discovered Rey Lopez.
Gil Grissom: how soon will we be able to say : good thing
Brass decided to give Gardner and Page a first base glove
To enhance their trade value plus give Anderson and
Keister options and late game double switches. ???
Excuse me – Cathcart for Page.
Does it seem that the first base options under Eusebio
Are double hitters???
Corredor , Florentino and Guzman are projecting as
Toolsy doubles hitters with 10-15 HR in time??
Good for Kevin Keyes, neither he nor Hague warranted a promotion to Syracuse but they have thrived so far.
With 25 & 30 AB’s @ AAA, their OPS 1.018 (Keyes) & .900 (Hague). Go figure.
Lest I forget Eusebio. He was well liked late last year by Cathcart. So he may be the guy that gets the quick bump if he shows something. He plays 3B, too.
Mark L. Nothing like competition to light a fire under the arse. Hopefully they are “real and spectacular.”
Agree. Gil Grissom. Keller is getting on base
Any which way plus loose plus he laid down
A beautful bunt this past week. He gets his uniform
Dirty daily.
Great point . Seperate the wheat from the chaffe in short
Season .
I am also going to keep my eye on the Canadien
Corner outfielder from W Kentucky .
Let’s see what Jeff Gardner does in the second half .
He is getting stretched / challenged in RF on days
Keller DHs or sits .
Good summation , Gil.
Guzman and Page should keep up their raking
In auburn
Just a quick correction – Crownover is a portsider, not RHP. I’m glad to see that they’re giving him a chance to start.
