Columbus 3 Syracuse 0 — COMP.
• Cole (L, 0-3) 2⅓ IP, 5H, 3R, 3ER, 3BB, 3K, HR
• Billings 4⅔ IP, 2H, 0R, 2BB, 5K
• ⅓ ⅔ IP, H, R, ER, BB, K
• Lerud 2-4
• Ramsey 2-4, 2B
Bruce Billings and Rich Hill blanked the Clippers for five and 2/3rds innings when play picked back up, but the offense was unable to push across one run, never mind three as the Chiefs lost the completion, 3-0. Billings gave up just two hits and two walks while striking out five over four and 2/3rds. Caleb Ramsey and Steven Lerud both went 2-for-4 to account for four of the eight Syracuse hits.
Syracuse 7 Columbus 4 (7 inn.)
• McGregor (W, 4-4) 5IP, 8H, 3R, 3ER, BB, K
• Valverde (SV, 2) 1IP, 1H, 0R, 0BB, 0K
• Martinson 2-4, 2R, 2HR, 2RBI
• Mastroianni 2-4, R, 2B, 2RBI
Syracuse rallied for four in the 3rd to turn a 2-1 disadvantage into a 5-2 lead and held on for 7-4 win to split the de facto doubleheader. Scott McGregor won for the first time in more than a month, letting in three runs on eight hits and a walk over five innings. The save went to Jose Valverde, who pitched around a one-out single in the 7th. Jason Martinson hit two solo home runs and went 2-for-4, as did Darin Mastroianni, who doubled in two during the Chiefs’ four-run outburst.
Harrisburg 4 Trenton 1
• Bacus (W, 2-1) 5IP, 3H, 2R, 2ER, BB, 2K, HR
• Harper (H, 3) 1⅔ IP, 0H, 0R, 0BB, 0K
• Severino 2-4, R, 2B
• Difo 2-5, R, 2B
Harrisburg overcame an early 2-0 deficit to complete the sweep of Trenton with a 4-2 win and extend their winning streak to five games. Dakota Bacus got the “W” with five innings pitched, allowing both Thunder runs on three hits and a walk while striking out two. Led by Bryan Harper, three relievers combined for four scoreless innings to seal the deal. Pedro Severino and Wilmer Difo both singled, doubled, and scored a run to lead the Senators offense.
Roster move: IF Cody Dent reassigned from Hagerstown (most likely this is a stopgap until Trea Turner actually arrives).
Frederick 9 Potomac 3
• Valdez (L, 0-2) 2⅔ IP, 7H, 9R, 7ER, 4BB, 0K, 0HR
• Mapes 4⅓ IP, 5H, 0R, 2BB, 3K, 3-3 IR-S
• Mesa 3-4, 2R, 2B, RBI
• Norfork 2-3, 2BB, RBI
The Keys scored in each of the first three innings to build a 9-4 lead and held on to take the rubber match, 9-7. Phillips Valdez was charged with all nine Frederick runs (seven earned) on seven hits and four walks over just two and 2/3rds innings. Tyler Mapes let in all three inherited runners but combined with Cody Davis to shut down the Keys the rest of the way. Potomac scored seven times on just nine hits, three of which came off the bat off Narciso Mesa, who also scored twice and drove in a run.
Lakewood vs. Hagerstown — PPD
Heavy rainfall postponed Sunday’s game against Lakewood. They’ll try to make it up with doubleheader this afternoon.
Roster move: C Jorge Tillero transferred to Auburn; IF Austin Davidson transferred from Auburn.
Now that he’s officially a Nat we need a name for the Trea Turner fan club a la Manno’s Minions. (Too bad Manno is no longer in Potomac to reap the rewards of a Manno’s Minions giveaway!) So what should we use for Turner?
I’ll get things started. My nominee is “Trea’s Transformers” a legion of both good and evil Trea Turner supporters that is a cog in the DC bureaucratic and a super powered sentient robotic P-Nats transformed by the passion of baseball fandom!
Using the ‘Turner’s Transformers’ name would certainly skew a younger crowd!
Matt Purke is actually starting an organized baseball game? Wow! Rooting for him to do well this afternoon for Hagerstown.
Purke had a 5 IP spot . FOrce @3b went Phils way
So run came in on F
David Masters made great back hand play one frame
