The Syracuse pitching staff presented few challenges to Buffalo in an 8-2 regular -season finale loss. With one out in the 1st, the Bisons loaded the bases on three singles before Matt Hague singled in Darin Mastroianni. After recording the first two outs in the 2nd, starter and loser Aaron Laffey allowed five hits, including two doubles. Among the thirteen hits Laffey allowed on the night and the twenty hits the Chiefs staff allowed, the biggest blow was a Brett Wallace double to left that scored Mastroianni and Cole Gilespie and put Syracuse down, 4-0. The Chiefs responded with an RBI double by Alabaman Destin Hood that scored Greg Dobbs. Laffey would give up two more runs on four hits and a sacrifice fly in the 4th before departing down 6-1. Sam Runion came on to start the 5th and was rudely greeted by a single, a double, and two more singles that put Syracuse down 8-1 before they put some lipstick on the pig with a Greg Dobbs ground-rule double and Will Rhymes RBI single off Brandon Morrow in the 9th.

Harrisburg avoided a tie for its worst record ever with a 3-0 whitewash of Portland in the season finale. Five Senators relievers combined on the shutout the Sea Dogs, beginning with Paul Demny, who threw three innings with two hits and two whiffs. Harrisburg scored an unearned run in the 2nd when Oscar Tejeda walked, took second on an error as Portland 2B Sean Coyle dropped the throw from the catcher, and scored on an RBI single by Adrian Sanchez. Tejeda and Sanchez teamed up again in the 4th as Oscar singled with one out to start the rally and Adrian beat out a double-play ball for his second RBI. James Simmons went the next three innings and earned the win by working around a one-out double in the 4th, an error in the 5th, and two-out double in the 6th. The Sens got their final tally of the 2014 campaign with a Drew Vettleson RBI single to score Quincy “The Dude” Latimore in the 7th. Robert Benincasa put up a zero the 8th to earn his first hold while Colin Bates closed it out in the 9th for his third save.
Potomac 6 Frederick 1

• Martinez 3-4, R
• Oduber 2-4, R, RBI, SB
• Norfork 2-5, RBI
The Frederick fans that waited out the 104-minute rain delay might have left soon afterwards as the Keys relievers were unlocked for six runs over their first three full innings of work in a 6-1 loss to Potomac. P-Nats starter Matthew Spann threw three no-hit innings, needing just 23 pitches to go through the Frederick lineup once, as the one baserunner he allowed (walk) was erased on a double play. Travis Henke took over after the rain stopped play with one out in the top of the 4th and went the next four frames, giving up a run on five hits and a walk to earn his fifth win. Estarlin Martinez went 3-for-4 to lead the hit column while Pedro Severino went deep with a two-run blast to break the 0-0 deadlock in the 5th.
Roster move: RHP Ross Ohlendorf removed from roster, assignment with Potomac completed.

Andrew Cooper was barreled up for three runs on a pair of 2nd-inning homers and four hits total over three innings. Spencer Kieboom got two runs back via solo HRs as Hagerstown piled up five runs over 3rd, 4th, and 5th innings to take the aforementioned 7-3 lead. Ryan Ullmann gave up three in the 7th and 8th innings while Samuel Johns was pinched for the final three Lakewood runs for his second loss and third blown save. • Gardner 3-4, 2B, CS
• Abreu 2-3, 2R, SB(10)
The Doubledays rallied from an early 3-1 deficit with three runs in the bottom of the 3rd and neutered the Muckdogs over the final six innings for a 4-3 win to close out the season. Starter James Bourque gave up all three Batavia runs on five hits and a walk while striking out four to earn his third win. Connor Bach followed with three scoreless innings for his fifth hold while Tyler Mapes worked around a hit in the ninth to notch his fifth save. Jeff Gardner singled twice and doubled once to lead Auburn’s 11-hit parade.
Thanks to all the players who worked so hard to chase their dreams and bolster the future of the Washington Nationals. Special thanks to those who won’t be in the system next season, and especially to those who may have played their last professional game. You accomplished something almost nobody can claim; no matter what you do next, you can always brag that you were paid to play baseball.
Agreed.
Also agree…but there’s lots of baseball left with the Playoffs!!!
Absolutely! As well as to those mid-season releases such as Justin Bloxom and Sean Nicol!
Lets see that Senator list to SYR soon. kkkkk
Potomac blows my mind. on paper they do not look like a pole to pole winner on the mound, but yes they did that.
Jeff, if you had Luke Erickson watching your every move, you’d perform well, trust me. Getting my writeups past his editorial knives is not an easy task.
Sad to see Rafael Martin didn’t the call to DC, but I’m not surprised. Gonna be tough for Syracuse to go but so deep in the IL playoffs with the personnel losses to DC and the lack of talent in Harrisburg. Tyler Moore to DC is a huge loss for the Chiefs, but I hope he gets some key ABs to help get him beyond AAAA status and onto a starting lineup somewhere outside of DC in 2015.
Q, Keyes, Vettleson, Simmons, Self, B-casa and Bro Harper would be my list for Chiefs bench along with Skole.
TY souldrummer: your moniker sounds like a Bill Bruford drumming CD,
Is there any other website in America that combines vital minor league seamhead info with a Bill Bruford reference?
I think not!
Ha! Looks like the Chiefs are going to get the big left-handed slugger from Syracuse after all! Plus Ross Ohlendorf is back
to buttress the Chiefs pitching along with Felipe Rivero and Tyler Herron. Looks like Rizzo and the FO aren’t going to give up
this year’s AAA playoffs without adding infusing some good talent to replace the loss of AJ Cole, Blake Trienen, Tyler Moore,
and Steven Souza. And they already had Michael Taylor in house.
In other news: (Courtesy of Lindsay Kramer at the Post Standard):
“Syracuse, N.Y.— Rehabbing Washington Nationals pitcher Ross Ohlendorf will join Syracuse for its International League semifinal playoff series against Pawtucket, Chiefs manager Billy Gardner Jr. said Tuesday.
Ohlendorf, who has battled a back ailment all season, will meet the team in Rhode Island. Ohlendorf will be used out of the bullpen, Gardner said.
Ohlendorf has not pitched for Washington yet this season. He got in two rehab starts with Syracuse in May, and is coming off an outing with Class A Potomac on Sunday. He likely won’t be available to pitch again until Thursday or Friday.
In other roster additions, Gardner said the Chiefs have added three players from Double A Harrisburg — pitchers Tyler Herron and Felipe Rivero and first baseman Matt Skole.
Skole, a fifth-round pick by Washington in 2011, is making his Triple-A debut. He hit 14 homers and drove in 68 RBI for the Senators this season.
“Needless to say, I’m just really excited to be here,” Skole said before the Chiefs team buses left on Tuesday. “Slipping into the clubhouse, you can tell these guys know what they are doing. They have it together. I’m going to be here, I’m going to work hard, I’m going to bust my (behind).”
* big left-handed slugger from Harrisburg.
Great. Any stock tips, Mr. Buffett?
Mark L: I could have easily used the Steve Thundersticks Smith moniker on souldrummer dating back to Jean
Luc Ponty!
Luke? smiles that Nats have cleared another potential lefty off 60 day DL Elisaul Gomez ( luke you may not use eli
on gomez cause eli to me will always be my second favorite ex-po Timmy Wallach) but if Gomez pitches like Gio- go for it
our nats chris berman. also nice to see Matt Reistetter ( what a german tongue twister if Matt caught Detweiler??) clear DL
since he seems like a nice bench option for Hagerstown next season behind TCU brad ausmus clone, Kyle Basak, who should catch a stud mound corp for suns.
nats fans . time to start doing the down with ATL chop!! 3 games to scalp braves. division title 2!!
by the way, I still believe PD wise the Nats should push guys like Wooten, estarlin and B Millertime to City Isle next
season since some guys just love the short dimensions there. maybe the BBQ stand does them well in the club house too??
