The Rochester Red Wings flew past the Syracuse Chiefs 4-2 when their suspended game resumed play with two outs in the bottom of the 1st yesterday. Syracuse took a brief 2-1 lead in the bottom of the 2nd when Jose Lozada doubled, and Wilson High School alum and D.C. native Emmanuel “Manny” Burriss singled him home. After the small ball of two singles and a sacrifice bunt put runners on second and third in the 6th, Rochester took the lead on a sacrifice fly and a wild pitch by “starter” but now long man Aaron Laffey. Despite combining for four free passes in four innings, Rochester’s Stephen Pryor managed to secure a win in relief and Lester Oliveros recorded a hold by stymying the Chiefs offense from the 5th through the 8th. Michael Tonkin recorded his eighth save for the Red Wings with a clean 9th.

An angry Syracuse squad responded in Game Two with a 7-0 whitewashing of Rochester. Starter Taylor Hill pitched a seven-inning complete game that was a model of efficiency, requiring only 86 pitches to earn his 11th victory. Emmanuel “Manny” Burriss singled and later scored on a Tyler Moore single in the first. The Chiefs turned this one into a laugher in a five-run 4th. Destin Hood circled the bases and invited Tyler Moore to join him in celebration at home plate with a two-run bomb to left field. Burriss did him one better by hitting a three-run bomb later in the inning that scored Greg Dobbs, who got on with a single, and Will Rhymes, who had reached base on a walk. To add insult to injury, the Chiefs tacked on their seventh run in the 5th when they punished the RedWings for walking fearsome Moore with a single by Hood then an RBI single by Greg Dobbs that scored Moore.

The Harrisburg Senators continued their dubious march toward history with nine lackluster innings in a 7-0 loss to the Trenton Thunder, a sub-.500 Yankees AA affiliate that they made look like the 1927 Yankees. Dante Bichette, Jr. evoked memories of Dante Bichette, Sr.’s glory days for the Colorado Rockies by depositing a baseball into the right field seats in the second inning. Since only Caleb Ramsey and Jason Martinson were capable of recording hits for the Senators, that’s all the offense the Thunder would need. Trenton scored an unearned run following a Rick Hague error in the 4th. Starter and loser Zach Kroenke ran out of gas in the top of the 6th when he allowed a single, a double, and a single to start out the inning before reliever James Simmons poured gasoline on the fire. After promptly recording two outs, Mr. Simmons melted down with a single, a walk, and two more singles that allowed three more Thunder to rattle home plate and put this one out of reach.

Much like the big Nats, the P-Nats put lots of runners on but only one in — courtesy of Isaac Ballou, who went (han) solo on Frederick’s Sebastian Vader over the CF wall in the 3rd — through the first seven innings. A two-out single, a two-base wild pitch and a passed ball gave Potomac a 2-1 advantage after eight innings. Gilberto Mendez, however, coughed up that lead with a two-run HR in the top of the 9th. The Keys returned the favor with a pair of errors to set up Tony Renda’s game-tying RBI single in the 9th, then committed another miscue in the 10th (fourth of the night) to give Potomac the 4-3 win in extras. The win, Potomac’s seventh straight, combined with a Wilmington loss reduces the magic number to clinch to six.

Hagerstown got one in the 1st, then were shown who’s their Crawdaddy by two Hickory pitchers for a 5-1 loss. Yohander Mendez and Angelo Leclerc held the Suns to just five hits and one walk on the night, with Narciso Mesa the sole batter to reach base twice. Travis Ott lost the 1-0 lead to the first batter he faced, gave up two more in the 3rd, and another in the 4th. He finished with four runs allowed (two earned) on four hits and two walks while setting down four on strikes. Greensboro, however, also lost to reduce Hagerstown’s magic number to eight. Should the Suns make the playoffs, Lucas Giolito won’t be pitching, according to WaPo’s Adam Kilgore.

Three Doubledays pitchers combined on a five-hit shutout of the Crosscutters by a 4-0 count. Anderson Martinez went the first six innings, giving up two hits and a walk. Robert Orlan let up two hits over the next two for this third hold while Mario Sanchez worked around a two-out single in the 9th to seal the deal. Jeff Gardner led the Auburn hit parade with two singles and a double while Raudy Read got things started with his sixth home run in the bottom of the 1st.

Play was halted in the top of the 4th after G-Met farmhand Manuel Hilario was seriously hurt in a head-first collision at second base. According to an official release by the Mets, he was airlifted to an area hospital where he was given a CT scan, which appears to normal and the 22-y.o. could be released today. They’ll pick up play today and play a second game afterwards.
