A.J. Cole labored through five innings in the Syracuse Chiefs’ 6-4 win over the Rochester Red Wings. Two batters in, Jeff Kobernus and Emmanuel Burriss scored when Kobernus hit his second AAA homer of the season. A Tyler Moore walk, a Eury Perez double, and a Jhonatan “Yellow Onion” Solano RBI groundout put the Chiefs up 3-0. Rochester closed the gap to 3-1 on a Pedro Florimon RBI triple in the 2nd before taking a 4-3 lead on a double and back-to-back homers in the 3rd. Brandon Laird’s two-out, two-run homer capped off a three-run rally in the 5th that gave the Chiefs all the runs they would need. Mitch “Steppin’” Lively, Matt “Savin’” Grace, Manny “No Harmin’” Delcarmen, and Rafael Martin combined for four shutout innings of relief. Mr. Martin still has yet to allow an earned run in twenty-six AAA innings. He recorded his sixth save.

The New Britain Rock Cats jumped out to a four-run 1st inning lead in their 5-1 victory over Harrisburg. Somehow, Harrisburg banged out thirteen hits yet managed to score just once. An Adrian Sanchez error at short allowed New Britain’s first batter of the game to reach base safely. After a double, a walk, and two singles scored three runs, a double steal by Reynaldo Ramirez, who stole home, and partner-in-crime Jorge Polanco scored the Rock Cats’ fourth run of the inning. New Britain got more help from the generous Senators when Kevin Keyes missed a catch at first with one out in the 3rd that contributed to an unearned run. Only a two-out solo shot by Drew Vettleson prevented this one from being a whitewash.

Wander Suero had his first tough outing for Hagerstown this season in the Suns’ 6-4 loss to the Lakewood Blueclaws. Wilman Rodriguez doubled in Carlos Lopez and Drew Ward to give the Suns a brief 2-0 lead in the topf of 2nd, but Suero allowed six singles and four runs in the bottom of the inning. Hagerstown answered back with a single, a double and two singles to load the bases with nobody out and the score now 4-3. Following a Drew Ward strikeout, Hagerstown essentially blew the game when Narciso “Oh no!” Mesa was thrown out at third by Aaron “Gunned You Down” Brown to make the third out of the inning. Andrew “Clap, Clap!” Knapp doubled and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Mitch “Not Balding” Walding that gave Lakewood the lead for good. Following a 6th-inning insurance run for Lakewood on three more singles off reliever Justin Thomas, Nick Rodesky ended this ill-fated night with a Rafael Bautista double play to record his first save in his first outing for Lakewood.

You can feel good about Hood but that’s about it as State College pummeled Auburn, 8-1 in the series opener. Destin Hood doubled with two outs in the 3rd to break up both the no-hitter and the shutout. He would later walk to account for half of the four (4) Doubleday baserunners (two hits, two walks). Robbie Dickey and Daniel Poncedeleon did some cop swapping (traded donuts) for five innings, with John Feliz making his NYPL debut with a scoreless 6th. The wheels came off the bus in the Spikes’ 8th as they sent 11 men to the plate and scored eight times with one out off Mario Sanchez and Tyler Mapes.

The G-Nats scored three in both the 3rd and 5th innings to stop a three-game slide with a 7-5 win over the G-Cards. Maximo Valerio got the win in relief of McKenzie Mills, who was knocked around for three runs over four inninfs on four hits and two walks. Randy Encarnaction smacked a three-run shot to dig the G-Nats out of a 3-1 hole. Jackson Reetz doubled twice to match him in the total-base count as the G-Nats got seven runs on just seven hits and four walks.

Telmito Agustin led the 20-hit parade with a walk, two singles, and two triples as eight of nine starters hit safely and reached base multiple times. Juan Bermudez “Shorts” started and went four innings, letting in two runs (one earned) on three hits and two walks. Franklyn Lopez got the win in relief with three scoreless innings with one hit and one walk allowed.
