Syracuse outlasted Rochester 5-2 in a ten-inning opening to a doubleheader sweep. Emmanuel “I’m No Webster” Burriss started off the proceedings with a leadoff homer. After the RedWings tied it up in the 2nd, Tyler “Dare you to call me Mary!” Moore gave the lead back to the Chiefs with a solo blast of his own. ‘Cuse starter Taylor Hill had to settle for a no-decision when he gave up a homer to Chris “Back, back, back!” Herrmann. Daniel Stange, Xavier “Y-Man” Cedeno, and Aaron Barrett held down Rochester before winner Matt “Savin” Grace entered to pitch one and a 1/3rd perfect innings. In the top of the 10th, the Chiefs poured three runs of offense onto loser Mark Hamburger who was “well-done” in by an Emmanuel Burriss single that scored Sandy Leon and Josh Johnson with the help of a missed catch error by catcher Dan “ROFL” Rohlfing at the plate. Rafael Martin still has yet to allow an earned run for Syracuse and recorded his seventh save with a scoreless 10th.

Syracuse 7 Rochester 3 — GAME TWO

Syracuse quickly dismissed the demoralized Red Wings 7-3 in game two. The Chiefs jumped out to a six-run cushion in the 1st inning when they sent nine men to the plate. Eury Perez singled in Emmanuel Burriss, and Josh Johnson accepted a generous two-out bases loaded walk before Sandy Leon put this one away with a grand slam. Rochester did edge closer with a picket fence of single runs in the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th, but Eury Perez tacked on an insurance run with a bases-loaded single. Laffey was pulled after laboring through 80 pitches in three innings so Mitch “Steppin’” Lively earned the win with two innings of one-run ball. Manny “No Harmin’” Delcarmen finished matters with a scoreless 6th and 7th.

Following yesterday’s “March to the Scaffold”, the Senators played a “Requiem” of a game in their 7-2 loss to the New Britain Rock Cats. All starter and loser Zach Kroenke gave up in five innings was an Eddie “Not Easy To You” Rosario two-run homer in the 3rd inning. A five-run bullpen implosion by Colin Bates in the 7th turned this one into a laugher. He had help by a fielding error by Jason Martinson, but Bates alone is responsible for the three-run triple he gave up to Corey Wimberly with one out. Four of Harrisburg’s five hits were doubles, though Harrisburg’s two cosmetic runs in the 8th were unearned due to an error from third basemen Stephen “Through The” Wickens.

Travis Ott was rudely introduced to the South Atlantic League by the Lakewood Blue Claws. Mr. Ott escaped harm in the 1st after the first two batters reached on a single and a walk when he induced an inning-ending double play by Zach “Not So Mean!” Green. Lakewood sent 13 men to the plate in the 2nd. Ott allowed two singles, a hit by pitch, a sac fly, another single, and a double before Hagerstown manager Patrick Anderson mercifully called on Ryan Ullmann for bullpen assistance. Ullman gave up three runs of his own, although only one of them was earned thanks to an error by shortstop Wilmer Difo. The closest Hagerstown came to scoring were men on first and third with two outs in the 6th before Drew Ward flied out to Larry “On the Scene” Greene in left.
Roster move: RHP Andrew Cooper placed on the 7-Day DL, making room for Ott.

State College 4 Auburn 1 — GAME ONE

State College picked up where they left off on Friday night, scoring four times in the first three innings as they took Game One from Auburn, 4-1. Anderson Martinez was taken deep twice — a solo shot in the 1st, a two-run homer in the 2nd — and gave up all four Spikes runs on five hits and two walks while striking out two over four innings. Cody Gunter broke up the shutout with a big fly in the 6th while “Orange” Marmolejos-Diaz accounted for a third of the nine Doubledays hits with a two singles and a double.

State College 7 Auburn 4 — GAME TWO

The two days off afforded by the NYPL’s All-Star break couldn’t come at a better time as the Doubledays were dropped in the nightcap, 7-4 for their sixth straight loss. For a brief moment, after the four-run 4th tat put them up 4-2, Auburn appeared poised to stop that slide. A two-run 5th erased that lead while a three-run 7th put the nail in the coffin.

GCL Nationals — OFF DAY
The G-Nats are still one good week or one bad week away from defending their division title or packing up for the fall. Only problem is there’s just two weeks left in the season. This week, it’s two home against the G-Marlins, one home versus the G-Mets and vice-versa for away games.

DSL Nationals — OFF DAY
The D-Nats took five of six in their penultimate week but with just six playoff spots between 36 teams and uneven divisions, the DSL postseason isn’t necessarily the six best teams in the league (e.g. The D-Nats would be a game up in the Boca Chica Northwest). Barring a collapse, the D-Nats will win 40+ games for the first time since Smileygate as they close out 2014 against the D-Mariners, D-Cards, and D-Orioles2.
