The Knights broke through for two in the 8th to break a 3-3 deadlock as they downed the Chiefs, 5-3. Manny Delcarmen took the loss, giving up the decisive runs on three hits and two walks in his lone inning of work. Josh Roenicke started and went the first five, giving up three runs on eight hits and three walks while striking four. Zach Walters (2-for-5) and Destin Hood (2-for-4) both doubled while Tyler Moore lofted a two-run shot in the 4th to give Syracuse its only lead at 3-2.

Altoona 9 Harrisburg 1 — GAME ONE

John Simms went off the rails in his fourth AA outing as Altoona pounded Harrisburg for a 9-1 win in opener. The Curve got to him for seven runs on eight hits and four walks off in four-plus innings as he dropped his first decision for the Sens. Sam Runion came in with the bases loaded and only let in one but was lit up for two of his own in the 7th as he finished the game. The Senators managed just four hits total; two by veteran Jose Lozada.

Matt Skole’s two-run home run highlighted a three-run 4th as the Senators split the doubleheader with a 3-2 win over the Curve in the nightcap. After striking out Stetson Allie for his 9th K, setting a new season high, Paolo Espino gave up a double that chased him from the game with one out in the 7th. He would finish with two runs allowed on three hits and no walks. Colin Bates followed suit with another double to the first batter he faced but got the last two outs to earn his first save of the season. Quincy Latimore was the lone Harrisburg batter to reach base twice in a five-hit, one-walk offensive outing.

A three-run 4th by the P-Nats erased an early 4-2 lead as they would go on to defeat the Keys, 7-5. Matt Spann was hit hard early and struggled with his control but gutted out five innings as he finished with four runs allowed on seven hits and five walks with one strikeout. He would get his sixth win as three relievers combined for four innings of one-run relief, with Travis Henke and Chris Manno earning holds and Gilberto Mendez notching his sixth save. Shawn Pleffner, Stephen Perez, and Pedro Severino each went 2-for-4 while the team drew nine walks and registered 10 hits.

The Suns scored in four straight innings and eight runs total before the Legends could answer with two in the late innings as Hagerstown won for the fifth time in six games, 8-2. Wander Suero went the first four in a spot start, giving up just one hit and no walks while striking out two. Ronald Pena won it in relief, pitching three innings of one-run ball with four hits allowed. James Yezzo dialed long distance twice and went 3-for-4 overall while his teammates got a baker’s dozen of hits off Lexington pitchers, with Wilmer Difo matching him hit the hit column with a 3-for-5 night.

A five-run 6th by the IronBirds turned a 1-1 tie into the eventual 6-1 outcome and snapped a three-game Doubledays win streak. Chase McDowell was strafed for five runs on six hits, including a two-run home run, with two walks and no strikeouts to record the loss. Starter Austen Williams went the first five and allowed one run on four hits and a walk while striking out six. John Wooten walked, singled, and doubled in four plate appearances while every Auburn batter hit safely for a total of 11 hits and two walks.

After a Gilberto Ramirez strikeout, Edwin Lora singled, stole second, and took third on an throwing error to set up Darryl Florentino’s RBI single in the bottom of the 6th. Jose Morales pitched around Lora’s error in the top of the 7th to secure the 4-3 G-Nats win over the G-Mets in the completion of the Friday afternoon game.

GCL Nationals 4 GCL Mets 3 — GAME TWO

In the regularly scheduled game, Ryan Ripken’s first career HR was a three-run blast capped off a four-run 8th as the G-Nats swept the de facto doubleheader with another 4-3 win. Luis Torres started and turned in five innings of two-hit ball with no walks or runs allowed and two set down on strikes. The win went to Kyle Simmons with a LaLoosh line of three runs let in on four walks, four strikeouts and a hit batsman over two frames.

Three errors in the 12th and six overall doomed the D-Nats to defeat, 6-5 to the D-Rojos. Ramses Rosario took the loss as he retired just one of five batters faced, letting in one inherited runner and one of his own on one hit and one walk while hitting a batter. It was the second time the ‘pen had failed, as Fiyeral Charlis blew a 5-4 lead in the 8th for his fourth blown save. Offensively, Victor Robles went 4-for-6 with two doubles and a triple while Davinson Pimentel went 3-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI to pace the D-Nats attack.
