• Stange 1⅔ IP, 3H, R, ER, 2BB, 2K
• Hood 3-4, 2R, 2-2B, 2RBI
• Peterson 2-3, 3R, BB,
• Goodwin 1-3, R, BB, 2RBI

A four-run 4th followed by a three-run 5th powered Syracuse to an 8-5 win to complete a four-game sweep of Durham and sixth straight win overall. Aaron Laffey survived six walks to give up just two runs on three hits while striking out one (yes, it was called) to push his record to 4-0. Destin Hood doubled twice and scored two runs while going 3-for-4 on the afternoon to lead the 13-hit attack that saw eight of nine batters hit safely, with Brock Peterson, Emmanuel Burriss, and Brandon Laird also notching multiple hits.

Binghamton 12 Harrisburg 6
• Schwartz (L, 0-6) 5IP, 4H, 5R, 5ER, 4BB, 0K, HR
• Dupra 3IP, 10H, 7R, 7ER, BB, 2K, HR
• Taylor 3-5, 2R, 3B, HR, 2RBI
• Hague 2-4, R, 2B, HR, 2RBI
• Ramsey 2-5, 2B, 2RBI

Blake Schwartz’s HR woes continue as the 24-y.o. surrendered his 6th — a three-run shot in the 5th — in seven starts as the B-Mets doubled up the Sens, 12-6. Schwartz gave up only four hits in five innings, but three of the four walks he issued scored as he was charged with five runs total. Michael Taylor returned from his leg injury to lead off the game with his seventh round-tripper and went 3-for-5 with two RBI overall. Ricky Hague also homered and drove in two while Caleb Ramsey singled and doubled and plated a pair.
Roster move: RHP Tyler Herron reassigned from Syracuse; roster is now back to full complement of 25

Myrtle Beach 10 Potomac 4
• Mooneyham (L, 2-3) 1⅓ IP, 6H, 7R, 7ER, 3BB, 2K, HR, 2WP
• Suero 5⅓ IP, 7H, R, ER, BB, 3K, 1-1 IR-S
• Perez 3-5, 2R, 2B
• Sanchez 3-4, 2RBI
• B. Miller 1-4, R, HR, 2RBI

Brett Mooneyham was knocked from the box in the second frame for the second straight starts as the Pelicans pounded the P-Nats, 10-4. The 24-y.o. southpaw was strafed for six hits, including a home run, walked three and was charged with seven runs while striking out two in just an inning and a 1/3rd. Stephen Perez and Adrian Sanchez continue to swing hot bats as the two IFs combined for six hits, two runs, and two RBI. Brandon Miller homered for the second time in as many nights for his team-leading ninth big fly.

Hagerstown 6 Hickory 2— GAME ONE
• Johansen (W, 3-1) 5⅔ IP, 3H, 1R, 0ER, 2BB, 5K, HBP
• Orlan 1⅓ IP, 3H, R, ER, 0BB, 2K, 1-0 IR-S
• Kieboom 4-4, 2R, HR, RBI
• Ballou 3-4, 2R, 2B, RBI, OF assist at 2B

Jake Johansen flirted with a no-no for four innings before giving up a single to lead off the 5th. The Nats top draft pick in 2013 finished with one unearned run allowed on three hits as the Suns took the opener, 6-2. Spencer Kieboom went 4-for-4 with a solo HR while Isaac Ballou went 3-for-4 to combine for seven of the 13 Hagerstown hits while Rafael Bautista and Wilman Rodriguez both stole two bases and hit the 10-steal mark.

Hagerstown 6 Hickory 4 — GAME TWO
• Turnbull 5IP, 6H, 3R, 2ER, BB, 3K, HR
• Cooper (W, 3-0) 3IP, 3H, R, ER, 0BB, 2K, HR
• Wooten 2-4, R, 3B, HR, 3RBI
• Difo 2-4, R, 2B

John Wooten’s two-run triple highighted a three-run 8th as Hagerstown beat Hickory in “extras,” 6-4 to sweep the doubleheader and extend the Suns’ latest win streak to five. Kylin Turnbull went five innings in his 2014 debut and gave up three runs (two earned) on six hits while walking one and fanning three. The decison went to Andrew Cooper, who finished the game with a run on three hits, no walks and two strikeouts. Wooten and Wilmer Difo both went 2-for-4 with a run scored to pace the Hagerstown offense.

Good to see Destin Hood still raking….only 8 games but 1.037 OPS in Syracuse.
Wahat to do with Schwartz? Luke, you saw him a lot last year, his numbers certainly warranted a promotion this year, but he seems overmatched at AA.

Schwartz is precisely the kind of pitcher John Sickels was referring to in his book: “Some guys can thrive at the lower levels on guile and deception, but many of them hit the wall in Double-A. I call this the Double-A Finesse Pitcher Acid Test.”

I think a move to the pen could be quite helpful for Schwartz. I think his stuff plays much better in a long man role out of the pen

Brandon Miller now has 9 HRs, 1 2B and 8 singles. Crazy,

Great to see Michael Taylor bounce back with a HR after a week off. His speed/power/defense combo make him a very unique prospect. The Nats are going to have an interesting decision on how they want to handle CF next year. For a number of reasons, the Nats will not re-sign Denard Span. Nate McLouth is signed through 2015, but he is at best, a part-time player. With the Nats need to spend money in other places to keep the rest of the roster in tact, would not be shocked to see one of Goodwin, Taylor or Perez splitting time with the big league team next year. If none of them are ready, they could move Harper to CF, but I don’t think that the Nats want to do that, nor do they want to make a major financial commitment to an OF free agent.

Per baseball-reference.com, the Nats have a 9 million team option on Denard Span for 2015 that I expect them to pick up if Span remains a serviceable big league starter. Goodwin would really have to blow up to swipe the job and Taylor needs at least one more year. I’m rooting for all of these guys to impress and some to become trade assets should the big club have needs.

MLBTR reporting that Ladson is reporting that Komatsu was released. Too bad … he came so close to making it as a Major League backup that one year, and then never seemed to make it back from injuries. Does that mean that Kobernus is coming back from the DL?

    1. Luke Erickson says:
      May 9, 2014 at 3:34 pm

As far as I can tell, it was to make room for Moore, not anything to do with Kobernus.

Time to give Ballou a promotion and let him take Worms spot @ Potomac.
