Tyler Moore’s grand slam was the highlight of the Chiefs’ five-run 5th as Syracuse ran the RailRiders off the tracks, 7-1. Caleb Clay scattered eight hits over six innings, though one made it over the wall for the lone S/W-B run. He walked none and struck out four. Xavier Cedeno, Cole Kimblal, and Mike Crotta combined to set down the last nine batters in a row. Danny Espinosa doubled and homered and scored twice, pushing his AAA batting average over .200 for the first time since June 15.

What a great day for Nats prospects!

What happened to Solis’ GCL start? Do you think they had a simulated game instead to keep him on a regular schedule?

I’m also really encouraged by Ray and Ward’s performances so far this season. Maybe it’s because so many draft picks are wasted on 23 year old college seniors, that whenever we sign a high schooler, it makes them that much more special.

I hope Ray can finish the season strong, as it will set him up nicely for a shot at the #5 spot next year.

And for superstition purposes, since Espinosa seems to play well when I comment on it, check out that triple slash for the past 10 games: .417/.470/.750!! And only 20% K rate!

re: Solis – That’d be my guess, though it’s entirely possible he’s pitching today. Rainouts wreak havoc on the GCL, which is a guessing game and why so often I punt and go with TBD vs. TBD.

Oh, I forgot to ask, what do you make of Caleb Clay? His peripherals don’t look very good- prone to HRs and extreme fly-baller, not overpowering (6.5 K/9), but he’s getting results. Does he have much of a future with the club, à la Christian Garcia, or is he just eating innings?

Not having seen him in pitch in person, I can’t really say much more than what you’ve pointed out. I’ve been surprised, that’s for sure. As for Garcia, I worry that his injuries have caused him to miss the train, so to speak.

he looks like another JD Martin to me. maybe a tick more upside

What’s the line on Billy Burns? 2nd in the league in OBP (to someone who was promoted to AAA), first in SB. Sure could use a leadoff hitter like that in DC.

Boy, the light bulb sure has gone on for Ray, what a great story. A full 9 innings, only 2 walks, and 11 strikeouts. Doesn’t get much better than that.
