The Syracuse bullpen squandered a strong outing from Craig Stammen in an 8-5 loss to Toledo. The Chiefs and Mud Hens traded runs early as Toledo took a 2-1 lead after the third. Syracuse scored four runs in the top of the 8th with the big blows being a two-out two-RBI single from Jhonatan Solano and a two-out RBI single from Jeff Frazier. Jeff Mandel gave up two runs in the bottom of the 8th, and Josh Wilkie gave up a grand slam in the bottom of the 9th for the Toledo walkoff win. With the loss, Syracuse falls to 47-60, two games up over fifth-place Buffalo and fourteen games back of first-place Lehigh Valley.

All five runs were charged to Erik Davis in a 5-2 Harrisburg defeat to Binghamton. Davis gave up two unearned runs on a Michael Fisher two-out, two-RBI triple in the third following an error by Chris McConnell. Davis gave up three runs in the fifth inning on a single, a walk, a two-RBI triple, and an RBI walk. Harrisburg had just five hits. Bryce Harper, McConnell, and Tyler Moore had singles; Chris Rahl had an RBI triple and Tim Pahuta had a double. With the loss, Harrisburg falls to 61-48, a ½ game up over Richmond in the E.L. West.

Hagerstown fell behind early, giving up an unearned run in the 2nd inning of a 3-1 victory over Delmarva. Matt Swynenberg was outstanding, however, and shut the door after that. Hagerstown scored a run on Brett Newsome’s fifth home run in the 6th and mounted a two-run rally in the 7th to take the lead for good. Shane McCatty was strong on this afternoon as he pitched three innings of scoreless relief to earn his first save for the Suns. With the win, Hagerstown improves to 18-17, 3½ games behind first half winner Hickory and 1½ games
behind third place Lakewood.

The Doubledays ‘pen stepped in admirably when Nate Karns decided he and the strike zone weren’t speaking to each other, pitching five and a 1/3rd scoreless innings in a 6-1 win over Tri-City. Karns walked six over three and 2/3rds, allowing the lone run on one hit while striking out three. Travis Henke got the win with three hitless innings. Bryce Ortega (3-for-4) and Angel Montilla (2-for-5) both homered in the rout. The win keeps pace with first-place Mahoning Valley, as Auburn is now in a three-way tie for second place with Jamestown and Williamsport at 24-19.

That’s five straight losses for the G-Nats with a 6-0 shutout at the fins of the G-Marlins. Jack McGeary got the start and gave up a run on two hits and a walk over two innings. It was his first appearance since Tommy John surgery last year. The offense was limited to just three hits, one walk, and one stolen base. The defense committed four errors, reclaiming the “lead” with 73 errors, two more than the GCL Yankees despite playing two fewer games. The loss drops the G-Nats record to 12-23, just one game ahead of the last-place GCL Astros, and reduces the elimination number to nine.

It’s another week mostly on the road for the DSL Nationals as they have five road games and a home game on Thursday as they enter the final 20 (or so) games on the schedule.
