After a leadoff home run by Gregor Blanco, Syracuse was completely stymied by the Scranton-Wilkes Barre Yankees’ Adam Warren last night. Matt Antonelli sat, and apparently the Chiefs offense sat with him as they mustered just two more hits and five walks on the evening. Ross Detwiler barely managed to survive the third inning. He gave up a single, a double, and a Kevin Russo two-run double to start the frame. That was immediately followed by a Greg Golson RBI single to make four consecutive hits and to have Detwiler reeling against the ropes. After a lineout to Jesus Valdez, Detwiler bounced back by striking out Jorge Vazquez and Brandon Laird. Detwiler showed some moxie in pitching through adversity for an encouraging fourth consecutive quality start, which will help him battle his way back into the DC conversation.

Carlos Martinez did his best to keep clean up after Mock, turning in a strong two and 2/3rds innings of relief and stranding both baserunners he inherited. Unfortunately, Harrisburg was practicing its binary code with a 100100100 box score. Steve Lombardozzi followed up his Eastern League player of the week with a classic get-on walk, get-over stolen base, and get-in on a Chris Rahl Single to give Harrisburg an early 1-0 lead. Derek Norris walked to leadoff the fourth, two singles loaded the bastes, and a Jonathan Tucker walk were responsible for Harrisburg’s second run. Sadly, the rally lost steam with a Lombardozzi double play groundout. In the 7th, Lombardozzi reached first on a Jose Pirela error, stole second, reached third on a Corban Joseph fielding error and later scored on a Rahl groundout.

Some of the usual suspects showed up for Hagerstown last night. Kelso scored in front of a 2R Frietas home run in the first. Manno’s Minions witnessed another dominant two innings of relief in the 9th and the first frame of extra innings. Sadly, Sammy Solis was his own worst enemy in the fifth. After allowing a leadoff double by Cameron Rupp, Miguel Alvarez singled. Carlos Pedermo reached on a Solis throwing error that ultimately led to an unearned run. Ground outs by Edgar “Duran” Duran, Zach Collier, and Jim Murphy were responsible for the second run that ended the scoring in last night’s extra inning affair before it was suspended. The Grasshoppers won to move into a virtual tie for first place with the Suns with five games to play, while Hagerstown’s magic number remains frozen at seven with seven games to play. Hickory also won last night and is a ½ game back of the top two teams, while Kannapolis is still mathematically alive at two games back with five to play but will only play 68 to ther rest of the teams’ 70 games with two games canceled

The D-Nats fell below .500 at 6-7 with a 7-6 loss to the DSL Rangers, which was not a doubleheader as anticipated. Gilberto Mendez got the start and struck out six but gave up six hits and allowed two runs (one earned). Somehow the D-Nats nearly overcame seven errors, but only two of the seven runs surrendered were unearned. Diomedes Eusebio and Adderling Ruiz each collected two hits to account for four of the team’s seven hits.

  2. Any word on Draft signees? Haven’t seen a lick of news, while people like ‘Zona have already signed 30 picks. Would seem they should have made some, especially since Auburn starts on Friday and GCL Natties start on Monday. Gotta fill those rosters somehow!

    Don’t have a clue why these are not being released, they’re not state secrets.

    1. DIdn’t MLB muzzle the signing announcements on a few players last year, particularly those who signed above-slot? I’d hope to see a boatload of names for Washington in Thursday’s and Saturday’s transactions listings on mlb.com.

    1. Thanks for the heads up on this stuff, Wally. I’m not sure why Manno is at Hagerstown at this point. Seems like they could have him pitching high leverage innings in Potomac at least. Relievers should be able to climb a system quickly if they’re dealing like Manno is. What did you see about Manno’s stuff last night, Wally?

  4. Got to start following Hagerstown closer. Would really like to see Kelso, Freitas and the boys earn their way to the playoffs. Do you think either Kelso or Freitas is likely to get promoted this year?

    1. I was just talking about Frietas with my kid last night on the way home listening to the game. We were not sure if he moved up, who would move down/around/etc. He still needs work on blocking the ball. I would hate to see him moved up to sit or platoon. But his hitting is SOOO clutch right now. Reminds me of our fav AAAA player JMax when he at the Suns. Every time he comes to the plate, you just KNOW something good is going to happen!

      Kelso is a total fan favorite at the Suns game. Consistent fielder at 3rd, I don’t see him at short (played there a few times) at all. He makes contact and just gets the ball in play at the plate. He’s not a slap hitter like EPerez, but full contact and full swing. I would hate to see him go, but i’m very curious to see how he does at the next level or two.

      I was excited at the beginning of the year about this team and i’m sitting on pins and needles for the remaining games against Delmarva at home. Finally we’re playing for something!

      1. Thanks for the report. I think Frietas stays down since S. Leon is at Potomac and not ready to move up yet. Right now no one is blocking Kelso from moving up to Potomac, Bloxom is not a 3B. Think Manno and odviously Harper will likely get promoted as well.

      2. Hoping HAG can pull out the 1st half championship. It would be a plus for all the fans & the kids on the team, giving them a reason to stay sharp over the 2nd half after the probable callups (Harper, Kelso, Manno, Solis). I personally think Freitas will stay in HAG all year, unless there is an injury somewhere up the chain; He’s much like Norris was at a similar period, in that he has some things that still need refining behind the plate, but at the plate he’s ready for the next level.

      Re: Mock — I believe there’s a psychological sunk cost here that’s in play, given Mock’s status as a Rizzo guy from his days in Arizona.

      1. I say release Mock and lets bring up some new guys. He’s just holding a prospect’s spot.

        Not related, but I love what Peacock is doing in AA. I saw him pitch and I think he is ready for promotion. When do you think it is coming?

  7. Souldrummer . here is my two cents

    Manno has good velocity not great He sits 88-90 and hits 91-93 at times. Last night not many people wrote about it , but his curve ball had great spin and deception. It was a little big but very effective. Now here goes the magic question, it looks like noone and I mean nonne gets a good swing at him. He must hide the ball very well or has major movement but guys just do not get good hacks at him.

    Kelso is the one guy in the line up that just has consistancy written all over him. I want him very much to improve on the defensive side but he can hit

    Frietas as all catchers needs to improve behind the plate. Do not misunderstand me , he is a a very good catcher , but catching is time and effort and he will improve, count on that. His results with the bat speak for itself. Love the kid and love his desire

    1. I think it’s the herky-jerky nature of his motion that throws off the batters. He also coils up like Lincecum — at the apex of his no-windup delivery, you can see his left hand behind his left knee (not his gluteus maximus).

  8. you know Sue , I understand when they say that but actually if you watch Manno after the arm folows through ,he is quite smooth . Look at the lead Glove it blocks the zone well

    1. I referenced Lincecum for that very reason: He’s perceived as being max effort by the masses but the mechanics experts praise his motion. I liked what I saw; I’d like to see it in Woodbridge in the 8th or 9th inning this year.

    I was interested to see that Freitas briefly passed Harper as the RBI leader for the Suns. It will be interesting to see if there is such a thing as a “Harper effect” when he moves to his next spot. Given Potomac’s place in the standings that would be of more interest but all the signs (and Bad-Ass-Tune man) were pointing to Harrisburg.
