Lombardozzi Named Eastern League Player Of The Week

June 14, 2011

Lombo gets the E.L. POTW nod

For the sixth time this season, a Nationals farmhand has received a weekly honor, with Steve Lombardozzi earning the Eastern League’s Player of The Week award for the period of June 5 to June 12.

The switch-hitting second baseman went 14-for-26 (.538) with a double, homer, an RBI, eight runs scored, three walks, two stolen bases and a partridge in a pear tree (just checking). The 22-year-old is riding a nine-game hit streak and leads the Eastern League with six triples, his 75 hits is tied for second, giving him the seventh-best batting average at .316. Lombardozzi entered the 2011 campaign as the No. 13 Nationals prospect according to Baseball America.

As I said in another thread, sometimes I think that Lombardozzi is an updated version of Jamey Carroll, in that many people spend so much time focusing on his perceived weaknesses (arm strength, power, etc) that they lose track of the fact that he’s a good baseball player.

Danger! Danger! Developing switch hitter lurking!

See Danny Espinosa. Espinosa is a great hitter and he is having problems adjusting to switch hitting in the majors. What do you think would happen to Lombardozzi? He needs to spend time in AA and AAA to get as far a long with that as possible. In Espy’s case they wanted his glove and were willing to allow him to develop in the majors. Mistake? Perhaps but that is what Rizzo and his brain-trust decided to do.

I think Spinner belongs in the majors right now. His power, defense, and low OBP line is pretty much what most talking heads predicted. I have no problems with him and I am far more concerned about Desmond than Espinosa.

If Desmond doesn’t start hitting again, our double play combination next year should be Espinosa-Lombardozzi with Desi as a trade chip in the offseason.

I’ve been calling for this since last year….get something good for Desmond, maybe a center fielder?

You & Sue have both been saying this for over a year. You get the feeling that Lombo’s going to be that dirtbag player that is so easy to root for, just like Jamey Carroll.

Anthony Rendon could be lurking as could Matt Antonelli. There is Rick Hague and Kobernus as well … its good to have competition at every level.

When’s the last time the Nats had an OBP kind of guy at the top of the order… would love to see this guy in DC… even if he has to play the OF to do it… just get him up there!

Well Nick Johnson used to bat 2nd but yes his OBP was really high. The current lead off hitter, Jayson Werth, has a .347 OBP which isn’t bad.

I agree; worse case scenario he could be a Jamey Carroll type of player that we let go / traded years ago. Carroll is now playing regular SS for the Dodgers after playing for several teams, so not too bad… No rush with Lombo at the moment but he is the type of guy you want in your team either as a regular or alternatively as a super utility guy.

I hope Jamey Carroll’s mother reads this thread!

Desmond has just turned it around playing shortstop and you guys want to let him go? Lombo will get his chance. The NATS have just set a FRANCHISE record for errorless ball, Desi’s improvement was a part of that.

The Nats just drafted what might be the best college hitter in many years. Where do you put him? 2nd base or 3rd more than likely if his gold-glove fielding and arm return post-injury. Espinosa seems to turn in web gems on an almost daily basis and the only reason he isn’t raking is because he is trying to develop the platoon bat.

      What’s Desmond’s excuse?
