Ross Detwiler backed up a strong start last Saturday with an even stronger start yesterday. He pitched three perfect innings to start the game off. He was touched for a solo HR by Yonder Alonso, the no. 3 preseason prospect in the Reds system according to John Sickels. Detwiler struggled with control in the 7th, walking Alonso to lead off the frame and then Bert Cleven before ending his outing by striking out Daniel Dorn. Balester offered outstanding relief. He wriggled out of Detwiler’s jam by stranding two inherited runners, striking out Michael Griffin on his way to retiring all five batters he faced. Syracuse MI Matt Antonelli continues to rake; after his 2-for-3 plus a walk and a homer afternoon, he is now hitting .423/.463/.684 over his last ten games. Somebody in the front office should be noticing this 25-year-old’s outstanding season by now.

A three run 9th homer by Josh Johnson broke the bats last night. They built a strong picket fence earlier in the game with single runs in the first, second, third, and fifth innings. They also brought the speed with stolen bases by Gilbert (1-4, RBI), Tucker (BB, R), Ivany, and Valdez (1-4, R). Shairon Martis answered some of his critics with a high K/BB ratio of 8:2. Jimmy Barthamier, Rafael Martin (in his first outing for Harrisburg this season, and Zech Zinicola combined for four scoreless innings.

Sammy Solis turned in his long outing of the season, tossing six and 2/3rds innings with a solo HR among the five hits he gave up as the Suns took a 4-1 decision from the Shorebirds. Four Suns got multiple hits but four runners were lost on the basepaths as Delmarva’s Michael Ohlman gunned down three would-be basestealers and Jacob Petit picked off Jason Martinson. Randolph Oduber and Martinson both hit solo shots to lead the Suns offense. Neil Holland and Chris Manno finished the game with two and 1/3rds scoreless relief to earn the hold and save, respectively. Combined with a Greensboro loss, Hagerstown reduced its magic number to 10 games for the Sally League North’s first-half title.

A three-run sixth pushed the D-Fish past the D-Nats for a 6-2 decision. Ivan Pineyro took the loss, down 2-1 after his five innings, as Daury Vasquez surrendered four runs over the next three innings. Wilmer Difo led the 10-hit attack with a 3-for-5 game while the D-Nats were a woeful 1-for-14 with RISP and stranded 11 baserunners.
