Ross Detwiler’s woes continue as the lefthander lost for the fifth time in the month of May and allowed four or more runs for his sixth straight start as the Louisville Bats slugged the Syracuse Chiefs, 9-4. A three-run homer in the four-run Louisville fourth was the bulk of the damage, as Detwiler allowed more baserunners than innings pitched for the ninth time in 10 starts. Michael Aubrey and Jesus Flores led the late Chiefs charge with a combined effort of 4-for-7 as the Nos. 3 and 4 batters in the Syracuse lineup.

Twice the Senators answered two-run innings with three runs and held off a late charge to win 7-6, sweeping the five-game series and extending the win streak to eight games. Bill Rhinehart’s 9th HR was the second of the three-spots put up, and gave the Sens the lead for good, with Tyler Moore’s solo shot in the 5th providing the final margin of victory. Tanner Roark set down 10 straight to finish his six innings of work, overcoming four runs early for his second win of the year.

Winston-Salem’s Ryan Buch was unhittable but wild, allowing no hits through six and 2/3rds but walking five in a 7-1 win over Potomac. Potomac starter Danny Rosenbaum flirted with disaster in every single inning, with the defense failing him for four unearned runs on two errors but also turning four double plays with Rosenbaum and Sandy Leon each picking a runner off first base. Jeff Kobernus got the lone P-Nat hit with two outs in the eighth while Steve Souza drew four of the team’s eight walks (none intentional).

A.J. Cole continues to pitch well but still lose, dropping his fourth decision without a win in a 3-0 loss to Kannapolis. The 19-year-old tossed five innings, giving up one run on two hits and a walk while striking out six, and lowered his ERA to 3.38. The Suns managed just two hits, with Blake Kelso and Brett Newsome both going 1-for-3. Wade Moore and Sammy Solis were added to the roster over the last two days, but which players were removed is still not known — presumably Chris Curran and a pitcher.

Cole Leonida’s two-run triple capped off a three-run fourth, but Sammy Solis ran into trouble in the fifth, giving up the tying runs. Wilson Eusebio surrendered the game-winning home run in the bottom of the sixth as the Kannapolis Intimidators took the nightcap and swept the doubleheader with a 4-3 win. Solis struck out seven over four and 2/3rds innings and allowed four hits and three walks. Bryce Harper and Brett Newsome each went 2-for-3 to lead the Suns offense.

Gregory Baez returned to the DSL, perhaps only until the GCL starts up, and tossed four strong innings in a 4-1, rain-shortened (presumably) loss. The 19-year-old gave up a single, a homer, and a walk while striking out five. “Fred” Ortega went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases while 17-year-old Bryan Mejia got the only other hit for the D-Nats, a double.
