Syracuse W, 8-5 @ Norfolk
Starting Pitcher: Arnesen (W, 3-5) 6IP 1H 0R 0BB 3K
Pitching Star: Severino (H, 9) 1⅔ IP 0H 0R 0BB 0K
Hitting Star # 1: Ordaz 3-5, 2B, RBI
Hitting Star # 2: Whiting 2-4, 3R, BB, SB
Notes: The Chiefs started quick out of the gate scoring two runs in the top of the 1st and another four runs in the 2nd to give them a comfy lead to start things off. To add to their comfort starter Erik Arnesen went six innings giving up only a single hit with no runs and three strikeouts. In the 5th, Syracuse added one more run to add to their lead. Norfolk made an attempt to break the lead Syracuse had obtained by scoring four runs in the bottom of the 7th . But Syracuse proved too strong today as they added one more in the 8th to win this one 8-5.
Harrisburg Senators W, 2-0 vs. New Britain
Starting Pitcher: Thompson 6⅔ IP 3H 0R 1BB 7K
Pitching Star: Pena (W, 1-2) 1⅓ IP 0H 0R 0BB 2K
Hitting Star # 1: Castro 2-3, R
Hitting Star # 2: Espinosa 1-4, R, HR, 2RBI
Notes: Harrisburg and New Britain were having a battle of the pitchers throughout this one as starter Thompson went 6⅔ innings giving up only three hits, one walk and seven strikeouts. Finally in the 7th Harrisburg was able to break the tie with two runs scored which would be all the Sens would need to win this one 2-0. Special thanks goes to Danny Espinosa who hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the 7th to win it.
Potomac Nationals — PPD
Notes: There’s something about Salem and the rain as the skies opened up last night in Woodbridge to force a doubleheader tonight starting at 5:30 p.m. with Jordan Zimmermann slated to pitch game one, and Danny Rosenbaum to make his debut in game two.
Hagerstown Suns L, 7-6 @ Asheville (12 inn.)
Starting Pitcher: Bronson 5IP 8H 3R 3ER 1BB 4K 1HR
Pitching Star: Erb 1⅓ IP 0H 0R 1BB 2K
Hitting Star #1: Perez 3-5, R, 2B, 4SB
Hitting Star #2: Newsome 2-5
Notes: Dean Weaver’s struggles to close out ballgames continues as the 22-year-old blew his 7th save in 20 opportunities with two runs allowed in the bottom of the 8th against the Asheville Tourists. Since the All-Star break, he has gone 0-4 with a 7.71ERA and has allowed 12 runs in 11 appearances. Offensively, Eury Perez wreaked havoc on the basepaths, stealing four bases — second base twice, third base twice while going 3-for-5 at the plate. Evan Bronson started the game and went five innings, allowing three runs on eight hits and one walk, striking out four.
Vermont Lake Monsters X, x-x @ Connecticut
Starter/Pitching Star: Hansen (ND) 6IP 5H 1R 0ER 1BB 5K
Hitting Star #1: Freitas 2-4, 2B, RBI (hitting streak now 16 games)
Hitting Star #2: Martinson 1-2, R, 2BB
Notes: Connecticut started the scoring in the bottom of the 1st with one run, but Vermont answered back in the top of the 3rd with a run of their own, thanks to a David Freitas RBI double to tie things up at 1-1. The game remained scoreless until the the bottom of the 7th, when Connecticut broke the ice with the winning run as they went on to win this one 2-1. Starter Bobby Hansen went six innings giving up five hits, one unearned run and one walk, but got the no-decision while Colin bates took the loss with one run allowed over two innings pitched.
