2012 Watchlist: Catchers

Sandy Leon Sandy Leon
DOB: 3/13/89
Ht. 5′ 11″
Wt. 175
Bats: S
Throws: R
Career Stats
Leon came to Potomac in ’11 as advertised: a
glove-first catcher that’s learning to hit.
Defensively, he’s close to a finished product
(twice named his league’s best defensive catcher
in BA polls). He pegged 51% of the runners that
tried to steal against him and made just 10 Es
in 104G (.987FA). Offensively, he’s shown flashes
of power, mostly as a LHB, but took a step back
in terms of OBP from ’10 to ’11.
David Freitas
DOB: 3/18/89
Ht. 6′ 2″
Wt. 225
Bats: R
Throws: R
Career Stats
This is his second year on the watchlist, but
both Sickels and BA have finally noticed him.
In HS he was a P/1B, so his defense is still in
development, particularly throwing out runners.
Scouts generally like the other facets of his
work behind the plate. Solid power and excellent
plate discipline but there’s doubt because he’s
done this as a college guy in Low- and SS-A.
Sickels gave him his “sleeper alert” tag for 2012.
Adrian Nieto
DOB: 11/12/89
Ht. 6′
Wt. 200
Bats: S
Throws: R
Career Stats
Nieto came into 2011 with a LOT to prove:
A .195/.291/.253 season in ’10 w/ the Suns, PLUS
a 50-game PED suspension. The ’08 pick played
his way back onto our radar with a .278/.360/
.450 line split between Auburn and Hagerstown
while cutting both his errors and passed balls in
half over roughly the same number of games
from ’10 to ’11. Likely to start ’12 in Hagerstown.
