Sunday Afternoon in Fredericksburg

It’s something of a mantra… as much as we want to think of these guys as being just a couple years away from playing in D.C., this particular afternoon was a reminder that they’re not that far removed from their amateur days.

Officially, five errors were charged during the game – four by the FredNats, one by the RiverDogs – but there were handful of plays on both sides where an MLB scorer might have been harder. There were also ten walks, two Robles, and two wild pitches.

Fredericksburg drew first blood with a two-out, two-run double by Cristhian Vaquero that fell about 6′ short of clearing the tall RF wall, hitting the MiLB logo in the 2024 Carolina League Champions sign.

That lead evaporated in the 4th as Charleston got three of its four hits off starter Davian Garcia and all three runs he allowed. The Nats’ 6th round pick walked four and struck out two over four and 2/3rds.

Kevin Dowdell followed but walked the first two batters he faced in the 6th and threw away a sacrifice bunt for an error. Two unearned runs came in and suddenly, it was 5-2 in favor of the RiverDogs.

Fredericksburg got those runs back in the 8th with the “help” of an error and a passed ball, though three straight singles by Jackson Ross, Nate Ochoa, and Carlos Tavares led to three runs and a tie game.

Charleston got two aboard in the 9th but did not score, as didn’t Fredericksburg in its half of the 9th to force extras.

The RiverDogs tried to small-ball it in the 10th, sacrificing the free runner to 3rd only to see him cut down at the plate by Tavares.

Jorgelys Mota singled to right to push the free runner to third, setting Ross for sac fly that won the game, 6-5, and the series, 4-2.

That made a winner out of Austin Amaral, who retired the side in order.

Fredericksburg (12-9) heads back out on the road to visit Salem for six. The indefatgable “TBD” is listed as the starter for Tuesday.
