On Monday, news broke that Nos. 4 and 5 – C Brady Lindsly and LHP Mitchell Parker – had signed. Yesterday, news broke that supplemental pick SS Sammy Infante had followed suit, along with Cavalli.
This morning, Byron Kerr passes along word that the next domino to fall is 3rd. Round pick RHP Holden Powell.
That leaves 2nd Rd. pick RHP Cole Henry as the final unsigned pick, and it would seem that his signing should be coming shortly.
Details on the amount of the bonuses are imprecise. Cavalli and Powell are unknown while Kerr is reporting $1M for Infante, $20K for Lindsly, and $100,000 for Parker. The bonus pool for Washington is $6,647,700.
As mentioned in the comments, draft picks this year are being forced to give MLB an interest-free loan over two years. A maximum of $100,000 can be paid out now, with 50% of the remainder paid out on July 1, 2021, and the final 50% paid out on July 1, 2022.
Ostensibly, that means Lindsly and Parker will be paid their full bonus. Yesterday, it was reported that players are being signed to a 2021 contract, enabling teams to get an extra season/year of control.
Given the economy and the uncertainty of 2021 on multiple fronts—the number of affiliates, the number of rounds in the 2021 draft, which and/or how many programs will operate— it seems rather obvious that players are taking the Hobson’s choice that MLB is giving them.
