With Max Scherzer scratched from his expected start today, the Nats turned to the ‘pen to get a longer look in a 3-2 loss to the Marlins.
Ben Braymer got the start but did not make the case for his inclusion on the 2526-man roster, as Miami stung him for two runs on six hits over two and a 1/3rd innings. The 25-y.o. southpaw walked none and struck out two.
James Bourque lowered his spring ERA to 2.84 with a four outs in four batters faced, three by way of the K. It was his fifth clean outing out six so far in 2020.
The loss went to Aaron Barrett, who gave up a lead off walk in the 8th that came around to score after a stolen base and a one-out single.
Carter Kieboom was the sole watchlist in the starting lineup, batting seventh, He went 0-for-3 with three Drew Wards.
Here’s how “our guys” did coming off the bench:
- Luis Garcia took over 2B from Starlin Castro and drew a walk with one out in the 8th
- Jake Noll did the stunt double thing with Ryan Zimmerman at 1B but struck for the second out in the 8th
- Yadiel Hernandez subbed for Juan Soto in LF and also struck out
- Tres Barrera followed Kurt Suzkui behind the plate but did not get to bat
Tomorrow, the Nats return to West Palm Beach to face the Astros. The tireless TBD is the official probable. The game can be heard on MLB Audio (away feed).
