Before we celebrate the Grizzlies savaging the Bees for 22 runs on 24 hits, consider that position players were pretty much forced to pitch five innings. With three starters called up to DC in the past five days, and five games in the last four, the Fresno bullpen has been overtaxed. Scott Copeland was called upon to pitch on two days’ rest after throwing 45 pitches on Thursday and went the first four innings, allowing two runs on four hits and a walk. Brandon Snyder, who had been the DH, came on in the 5th to protect an 8-2 lead and let in one run over two to get the win. Matt Reynolds, José Marmolejos, and Matt Reistetter each turned in an inning to finish the game. The six runs they gave up was still four less than the Grizzlies got in the 7th when they sent 14 men to the plate and 10 of ’em came in, extending the lead from 8-3 to 18-3. Reynolds and Andrew Stevenson both had five hits and scored four runs while Carter Kieboom reached base six times with three walks, two singles, and his 12th HR.

The Sens scored in five of the first six innings to build a 9-4 lead and held on for a 9-7 win over the BaySox, snapping a four-game losing streak. Wil Crowe gave up four runs on six hits over six innings to get the Jack Morris win, his sixth. Aaron Barrett gave up the final Bowie run on a hit and a walk in the 9th to get credit for his 14th save. Tres Barrera drove in four while going 3-for-5 with a double and a homer and two runs scored while Luis Garcia got three singles and a sacrifice to lead Harrisburg’s 13-hit parade.

Mudcats starter Noah Zavolas was brilliant, tossing a complete-game, two-hit shutout to beat the P-Nats, 3-0. Potomac starter Andrew Lee pitched well enough to win, giving up two runs (one earned) on three hits and two walks over six innings. He struck out eight while losing his fifth game. Nick Banks broke up the no-hitter with leadoff single in the 4th while K.J. Harrison doubled with one out in the 5th. Both baserunners reached third but neither got there with less than two out as Zavolas retired the last 14 batters in a row, barely missing a Maddux as he threw 101 pitches, 78 for strikes, walked none, and set down 11 on strikes.

The Barves never trailed as they doubled up the Suns, 8-4 to earn a split of the four-game series. Tomas Alastre lost for the seventh time in 14 starts as he gave up the first five Rome runs on eight hits and a walk while fanning two over five innings. Gilbert Lara doubled, singled, and walked while Justin Connell reached base three times on a single and two walks as the Suns squeezed four runs out of four hits and four walks.

Auburn briefly led this one 1-0 but couldn’t push across a second run and lost to Mahoning Valley in extras, 2-1. Carlos Romero struck out five, walked none, and gave up the first Scrappers run on four hits. Gilberto Chu and Jairon Peguero combined for three and 2/3rds scoreless innings of relief before giving way to Pearson McMahan, who got the last out in the 9th, pitched a scoreless 10th, and following a sacrifice and a Victor Robles, let in the winning run on a wild pitch in the 11th. José Sanchez singled twice for two of the four Doubledays hits, including the one time in 11 RISP chances as the Doubledays left on six runners in the first nine innings, two in extras.
