2013 Watchlist: Shortstops

Zach Walters Zach Walters
DOB: 9/5/89
Ht. 6’2″
Wt. 195
Bats: S
Throws: R
Career Stats
Walters has mostly played SS on defense to
take advantage of a strong arm. But it’s his
bat that saw him rise from High-A to AAA in
’12. Simply put, he’s a switch-hitting IF with
some pop and can run the bases. The Nats
appear to think he can be made into a UT if
the need arises. Had a hamate bone (RH) re-
moved early in the season, so you could see
even more power in ’13
Ricky Hague Ricky Hague
DOB: 9/18/88
Ht. 6’2″
Wt. 190
Bats: R
Throws: R
Career Stats
Hague may have fallen some as a shortstop,
yet gained something by proving he can play
2B, quite a feat considering he had missed
most of ’11 with a shoulder injury and was
considered raw on defense. Offensively, he’s
a streaky hitter, better at home and vs. LHPs
last year. The trick will be evening out these
extremes while continuing to improve on
defense.
Jason Martinson Jason Martinson
DOB: 10/15/88
Ht. 6′ 1″
Wt. 190
Bats: R
Throws: R
Career Stats
Martinson began ’12 by repeating Hagers-
town, but finished in the AFL with a 7G hit
streak. He made modest improvements with
his defense, but the K’s continue to pile up
(offspeed pitches are his kryptonite). He
also has tremendous power and athleticism
(equal to if not better than Destin Hood).
It’s easy to see why he was drafted and folks
should be patient because if it ever “clicks,”
it could be “Desmond-esque.”
Wilmer Difo
DOB: 4/2/92
Ht. 6′
Wt. 175
Bats: S
Throws: R
Career Stats
Difo was promoted from the DSL to the GCL
in the middle of the ’11 season so his repeat-
ing the GCL in ’12 was not a surprise. Most of
his gains were modest from ’11 to ’12, but
he’s been playing the position almost exclu-
sively since his DSL debut in ’10, so it’s fairly
clear this is his position. Best guess for his
’13 assignment: Auburn.
