Scouts still believe that the just-turned-21-y.o. can tap into the power
for which he became famous as an amateur. They point to an ability
to work the count, which did avail itself with 53 walks in 123G between
Potomac and the AFL. That helps to offset a high K rate, though the
belief is that will improve. Less likely: sticking at 3B as he is very slow.
While he could be moved up to AA, returning to Potomac might be in
his best interests long-term so he can experience some true success.

Gutierrez has made the watchlist for three years running, beginning
at shortstop and third base this year and last. Defensively, he took a
large step back, committing 18 errors at 3B and three at SS. This begs
the question: How long before he’s shifted to 1B? Offensively, he
continues to shine: a .305/.358/.414 line in 62 games and has improved
each year. Naturally, he’s expected to start 2016 in Hagerstown.
Anderson Franco Anderson Franco
DOB: 8/15/97
Ht. 6’3″
Wt. 190
Bats: R
Throws: R
Career Stats
After signing for $900K in mid-August of 2013 (i.e. on his 16th birthday),
Franco has risen from the DSL to Auburn in just two short seasons. The
18-y.o. features a quick bat, raw power, good hands, and a strong arm,
but does not run well. If he returns to upstate New York in 2016, it’s likely
because the Nats want him to refine his strike-zone judgment, as scouts
note the (rather common) inability to lay off breaking balls away.
