2012 Watchlist: Shortstops

Zach Walters Zach Walters
DOB: 9/5/89
Ht. 6’2″
Wt. 195
Bats: S
Throws: R
Career Stats
It was a tale of two Walters for the Nats
in ’11. The Potomac version hit .293 and was
smooth in the field, the AFL version labored
to hit his weight and made multiple errors
while playing 3B. Hits for average, but the
power that he showed in Low-A and SS-A
was missing in High-A and the AFL. Runs
well, very athletic. Scouts project him as a
UI if the range and errors don’t improve.
Jason Martinson Jason Martinson
DOB: 10/15/88
Ht. 6′ 1″
Wt. 190
Bats: R
Throws: R
Career Stats
A two-sport athlete in college, albeit
briefly, Martinson has the usual challenge
of turning raw tools into skills. He’s got the
arm and range for SS, but scouts note that
most of his E’s come from poor reads. His
above-average speed and power, along
with his ability to take a walk, is what has
folks intrigued. The K’s (144 in 129G) is
what has them worried.
Rick Hague Rick Hague
DOB: 9/18/88
Ht. 6’2″
Wt. 190
Bats: R
Throws: R
Career Stats
A shoulder injury during the first Potomac
homestand ended Hague’s 2011, but his
strong 2010 pro debut and college
reputation keep him on the 2012 radar.
Defensive woes are what dropped his stock
from the 1st to the 3rd Rd., and scouts were
wary that he could stick at SS or had the
hands to play 2B before hurting his arm.
The ’12 season will be pivotal for him.
Bryce Ortega Bryce Ortega
DOB: 9/22/88
Ht. 5’11”
Wt. 170
Bats: R
Throws: R
Career Stats
Ortega played 3B and 2B for Arizona in
his senior season, but SS for Auburn last
summer, leading the Doubledays in BA,
OBP, and SBs. His age and lack of power
is going to raise doubts. Given the P-Nats
infield logjam, put your bets on Hagerstown
for the OB (Other Bryce) in 2012.

Wilmer Difo
DOB: 4/2/92
Ht. 6′
Wt. 175
Bats: R
Throws: R
Career Stats
Began ’11 in the DSL, finished it in the GCL
while improving his line from .209/.293/.277
to .288/.391/.391. Still a bit error prone,
but put up one of the best RFs for a SS in
the organization at the GCL level.

Junior Geraldo
DOB: 1/22/93
Ht. 6’1″
Wt. 185
Bats: R
Throws: R
Career Stats
Geraldo took over for Difo at SS for the
D-Nats and put up strong numbers (.909
OPS) in an admittedly small sample size
(71PA) but did so as an 18-year-old.
