Watchlist: LH Relievers

Joe Testa Joe Testa
DOB: 12/18/85
Ht. 5′ 10″
Wt. 175
Bats: L
Career Stats
Acquired in the Matt Capps deadline deal that
more famously netted Wilson Ramos, Testa was
considered a throw-in, particularly after a poor
showing at AA (1-4, 8.25). Undersized (5-10,
175), Testa compensates by throwing a large
arsenal of pitches, including a cutter, two- and
four-seam fastballs, changeup an curve.
Paul Applebee Paul Applebee
DOB: 5/17/88
Ht. 6′ 3″
Wt. 195
Bats: L
Career Stats
Applebee swung between the Hagerstown ‘pen
and rotation, but was more effective as a
reliever (3.64 vs. 4.56 ERA). A soft-tossing lefty
(85-87), Applebee lives on his plus changeup
while showing some touch on his slider.
Josh Smoker Josh Smoker
DOB: 11/26/88
Ht. 6′ 2″
Wt. 195
Bats: L
Career Stats
Smoker struggled mightily for most of the
2010 season before moving to the bullpen at
the beginning of August. In eleven outings,
Smoker posted a 1.35 ERA with 21K’s in 13⅓
innings, his fastball clocked as high as 97 m.p.h.
He also walked eight, but Sickels believes that
if the walks can be toned down, this move
could resurrect his career and put him back on
the prospect radar.
Ryan Demmin Ryan Demmin
DOB: 4/5/88
Ht. 6′ 1″
Wt. 210
Bats: L
Career Stats
A 2010 draft pick, Demmin was one of the few
truly bright spots in the Vermont bullpen,
striking out 32 in 31 innings of work primarily
as a reliever with a 1.45ERA. Throws a mid-80s
fastball with a plus slider.
Christian Meza Christian Meza
DOB: 8/3/90
Ht. 6′
Wt. 185
Bats: L
Career Stats
Said to have “plus command of fringy stuff” by
draft guru Andy Seiler, Meza posted a 1.52 ERA in
the GCL before getting hammered in two NYPL
appearances but makes the list as a multi-level
pitcher in 2010.
Nick Serino Nick Serino
DOB: 10/25/88
Ht. 5′ 10″
Wt. 205
Bats: R
Career Stats
Serino is a former teammate of Mitchell Clegg
at UMass that put up decent numbers in the GCL
(25K in 25⅔ IP) as a 37th-round pick, translating
his 10.72K/9 in 2010 from the A-10 to the pros.

Ht. 6′ 3″
Wt. 175

year-old that had a near league-average ERA
despite walking 18 and allowing 18 hits in 21
innings. He also struck out 23, with just three
WP and three HBP.
