2011 Watchlist: First Basemen

Chris Marrero Chris Marrero
Born: 7/2/1988
Ht. 6′ 3″
Wt. 210
Bats: R
Throws: R
Career Stats
The potential for power has been syn-
onymous with Marrero writeups for five
years now, but the in-game results have
been sporadic at best. Scouts point to a
“bucketfoot” tendency instead of striding
forward. His swing has decent leverage,
and it’s fair to say he’ll likely hit for
average. But as a defensive liability, he
needs to tap into that power to justify
placement at 1B in the National League.
This is a pivotal year for Marrero, who
will likely begin 2011 at Syracuse.
Tyler Moore Tyler Moore
Born: 1/30/1987
Ht. 6′ 2″
Wt. 185
Bats: R

The jump from High-A to AA is the largest
leap of them all, and it’s the one that Tyler
Moore will have to make with authority to
shake the “fluke” label that’s been whis-
pered in the offseason. Moore hits with
power to all fields and a significant
portion of his ’10 success is attributable
to simply not falling behind early. Late
in the season, opponents were pounding
him insidewith a modicum of success,
so he can probably expect the same at
Harrisburg early. A fringe-average
fielder but a below-average baserunner.
Justin Bloxom Justin Bloxom
Born: 4/29/1988
Ht. 6′ 1″
Wt. 205
Bats: S
Throws: R
Career Stats
Injuries shortened his breakthrough 2010
season, one in which he had two red-hot
months in April (.349) and June (.369) to
make our watchlist. A switch-hitter that
hits for power lefthanded, but about the
same average as a righty. He’s often
compared to Bill Rhinehart, which is a bit
of a double-edged sword, but with Moore
and Marrero ahead of him, not to
mention the Rizzo M.O. thus far, he’s
unlikely to hit a wall by being rushed
too far too soon.
Mills Rogers Mills Rogers
Born: 6/8/1988
Ht. 6′ 1″
Wt. 195
Bats: R
Throws: R
Career Stats
We’ve got him on our watchlist as a 1B,
but he spent considerable time in his
collegiate career as a SS, albeit with a
.915 fielding percentage. One of a handful
of 2010 GCL “graduates” that saw time in
Hagerstown, hitting .286/.365/.446 over
18 games.

Jean Carlos Valdez
Born: 3/14/1993
Ht. 6′ 2″
Wt. 190
Bats: R
Throws: R
Career Stats
Like many DSL players, Valdez multiple
positions on defense, but with an .876 FA
at 3B (vs .978 at 1B), he’s more likely to
stick at 1B for the foreseeable future
(nice way of saying that’s my guess). Hit
.249/.309/.354 as a 17-year-old in the
DSL in 2010.
