2011 Watchlist: Catchers

Wilson Ramos Wilson Ramos
DOB: 8/20/87
Ht. 6′
Wt. 220
Bats: R
Throws: R
Career Stats
Defense is the name of Ramos’s game, with a
plus arm and soft hands. Still needs work on
gamecalling and handling pitchers. Doesn’t
strike out much, but also doesn’t walk much.
Scouts feel like there could be some power
down the line, noting his strength and
physique. Conditioning, however, has been a
problem and he is a poor baserunner.
Derek Norris Derek Norris
DOB: 2/14/89
Ht. 6′
Wt. 210
Bats: R
Throws: R
Career Stats
With the exception of the ignorant “he takes
too many pitches,” or maybe that he struggles
a bit with breaking pitches, there’s little to
criticize about Norris’s offensive prowess. To
quote Baseball America’s Aaron Fitt: “Consid-
ering he had little catching experience before
turning pro, Norris has made major strides
defensively.” Strong arm, with a quick release
and runs well for his size; very athletic.
Sandy Leon Sandy Leon
DOB: 3/13/89
Ht. 5′ 11″
Wt. 175
Bats: S
Throws: R
Career Stats
A watchlist player, Leon had a breakout year
(for him) offensively at .249 and was named to
the midseason Sally League All-Star team. Our
spies say he works well with pitchers and has
solid-but-average defensive skills that will
keep him in the system for quite some time.
At 22 going into 2011, there’s still time for
him to get the bat to the same level as the glove.
David Freitas David Freitas
DOB: 3/18/89
Ht. 6′ 2″
Wt. 225
Bats: R
Throws: R
Career Stats
A 2010 draftee, Freitas had a good season at
Vermont, posting a .307/.408/.450 line to
place him on our watchlist. Like Norris, Freitas
came to the position late in his amateur career
and thus he is still learning the position after
mostly pitching and playing 1B in high school.
He split time in 2010 between catcher and DH.
Jeremy Mayo Jeremy Mayo
DOB: 6/17/88
Ht. 5′ 10″
Wt. 194
Bats: R
Throws: R
Career Stats
Another ’10 draft pick, Mayo put up a decent
line of .284/.397/.477 in the GCL, which is not
that far off from the .299/.395/.508 line from
his senior year at Texas Tech. Greg Schaum of
RoyalsProspects.com says his speed is
particularly good for a catcher and compares
him to Jeff Mathis of the Angels.

Paul Chacin
DOB: 2/27/91
Ht. 6′
Wt. 180
Bats: R
Throws: R
Career Stats
The Venezuelean-born Chacin improved both
offensively and defensively in his second year
in the DSL, raising his hitting line from
.172/.264/.304 to .281/.355/.336 and settling
behind the plate after committing 11E in 26G
at 3B in ’09.

Adderling Ruiz
DOB: 5/3/91
Ht. 6′ 1″
Wt. 175
Bats: R
Throws: R
Career Stats
Splitting time with Chacin, Ruiz made our
watchlist with his glove, throwing out 33% of
basestealers and fielding at a .978 clip — not
bad for a 19-year-old at this position.

2 Commments

    1. Hasn’t been released or retired, but he’d be competing with Sean Rooney for the backup job to Norris at Harrisburg. Devin Ivany and Carlos Maldonado appear to be the two C’s for Syracuse at this point.
