Balester Back In DC, Ripple Effect TBD

With the placement of Tom Gorzelanny on the 15-Day DL retroactive to Tuesday, the Washington Nationals have recalled Collin Balester from Syracuse to take his roster spot. Balester, however, will be in the ‘pen which means another move may be coming to replace Gorzelanny in the rotation.

Bill Ladson is reporting that that will be Yunesky Maya. Presuming that’s true, one can surmise that at the very least, J.D. Martin will get a spot start tomorrow. Whether he stays in the Syracuse rotation is another matter.

The addition of Zech Zinicola is most likely a tipoff that a pitcher is going from Harrisburg to Syracuse. Unfortunately, it could be a reliever just as easily as it might be a starter (Brad Peacock last pitched on Wednesday). Doubleheaders further down the ladder (Potomac and Hagerstown today, Harrisburg and Potomac tomorrow) further complicate matters and make it harder to guess what may be coming.

As always, if anything breaks in the next few hours, watch this space for updates…

Wilson Ramos Recalled From Syracuse

Multiple online sources are reporting that Wilson Ramos has been recalled from AAA Syracuse, in part to replace Wil Nieves who is expected to leave the team for the birth of his daughter with wife Yormarie Nieves.

Ramos has put up a line of .317/.349/.483 since joining the Syracuse Chiefs after the trade with Minnesota for All-Star Closer Matt Capps in late July. He is expected to be optioned back upon Nieves’ return, but is also expected to be one of the September call-ups.

Mike Burgess Promoted To Harrisburg

Various online reports have stated that Potomac OF Mike Burgess has been promoted to AA Harrisburg. This is not unexpected, as the deadline for the Arizona Fall League is tomorrow and the 21-year-old has been considered a candidate for this year’s AFL class.

Burgess began the year slowly, then heated up in May (.313/.394/.509) before cooling off in June (.183/.280/.312). Much of July was lost to bereavement leave after a death in his family.

Strikeouts are still very much a problem for Burgess, but his struggles to hit lefties appear to be behind him. This year, he has hit them to the tune of .281 (.256 for RHPs) whereas last year he hit .221, and his slugging percentage, down from last year, is dead-even with .430 against both. His arm remains one of the best in the system and the 15 lbs or so he lost in the offseason has been noticed in the field with better range and more balls in the gap being run down and/or caught.

UPDATE: MASN’s Ben Goessling has gone to virtual ink with the story.

Carr Promoted to Syracuse

Sources have indicated to us that Adam Carr is on his way to Syracuse to help bolster the Chiefs bullpen while Colin Balester remains with the parent club. Carr has a 6-1 mark with five saves a 3.04 ERA this season with Harrisburg with 48 strikeouts in 50⅓ innings. He was also named to the 2010 Eastern League All-Star game, in which he struck out the only batter he faced.

Carr was an 18th-round draft pick out of the University of Oklahoma Oklahoma State in the June 2006 First-Year Player Draft. He has a career record of 19-17 with 35 saves and a 4.44 ERA, as well as a .288BA with 3HRs in 71PAs (most at the GCL in ’06).

UPDATE: Per NFA, Brad Peacock and Josh Johnson have been sent up to Harrisburg, with Francisco “Watch Out Behind First Base” Soriano coming up from Hagerstown and Jimmy Barthmaier coming up from the GCL.

UPDATE #2: Replacing Soriano on the Hagerstown roster is Rick Hague, who will bat second as the DH in game one of today’s doubleheader, according to the Suns twitter feed
