Notes: On 93-degree night with a slight breeze, neither team had any trouble generating offense with a combined 25 runs and 40 hits on the scoreboard. But Winston-Salem won again in walkoff fashion, scoring the tying and winning runs with two outs in the bottom of the 12th. Tyler Moore remained red-hot, smacking two doubles and driving in three while extending his hitting streak to nine games. Notes: In the 3rd the Suns scored one run to start things off, and kept things scoreless until the bottom of the 5th when Asheville scored four. Hagerstown scored one in the top of the 6th, but Asheville wouldn’t let up as they scored one in the bottom of the inning. Hagerstown scored another run in the 7th and 1 more in the 9th, unfortunately Asheville scored 2 of their own in the bottom of the 8th to win this one 7-4. In the 7th Vermont put this one to bed as they scored two runs to win 6-5. Starter Chad Jenkins went five innings, giving up four runs on three hits and three walks while collecting six strikeouts, but the decision went to Wilson Eusebio who pitched three innings in relief and allowed one run. Randolph Oduber shook off his slump of 12 hitless at-bats to collect three its and drive in three runs, pacing the 12-hit, 11-run offensive effort. Tyler Hanks was the first man out of the bullpen, and got the win with two runs (one unearned) allowed over five innings.

Syracuse Chiefs L, 7-6 @ Norfolk
Starting Pitcher: Martis 3⅓ IP 9H 4R 4ER 2BB 2K
Pitching Star (kind of): Walker ⅔ IP 0H 0R 2BB
Hitting Star #1: Ordaz 2-5, R, 3B, 3RBI
Hitting Star #2: Maxwell 2-2, R, 2-2B, BB, SB, RBI
Notes: A throwing error in the bottom of the eighth sealed the win for the Norfolk Tides, who took the series three games to one. Syracuse started with bang with a three-run first inning, only to have the Tide answer with two then take the lead 4-3 with another pair of runs in the bottom of the 4th. The Chiefs struck again for three runs in the 5th, highlighted by a two-run triple off the bat of Luis Ordaz to give Syracuse a 6-4 lead. Norfolk tied the game at six one inning later in the bottom of the 6th and took the lead for good thanks to the Chiefs’ fourth error of the game when Jamie Burke’s errant throw to first on an attempted 5-2-3 double play. Starter Shairon Martis went just 3⅓ and gave up the first four runs on nine hits and two walks while striking out two.

Harrisburg Senators L, 9-1 @ Portland
Starting Pitcher: Lannan (L, 1-3) 5IP 9H 4R 3ER 0BB 5K 1HR
Pitching Star: None
Hitting Star # 1: Ivany 2-4, R, 2B
Hitting Star # 2: Castro 1-2, 2B, BB, RBI
Notes: Harrisburg started with the lead in the top of the 2nd with 1 run, unfortunately that was all they’d get in this one. Portland took advantage of the Sens lack of scoring by scoring plenty of their own runs. Portland added one run each in the 4th and 5th, and another three runs each in both the 6th and 7th innings. They finally added one more in run in the 8th making this a 9-1 blowout win for Portland. Starter John Lannan went five innings giving up nine hits, four runs and five strikeouts with the loss, his third at AA.

Potomac Nationals L, 5-4 @ Winston-Salem
Starting Pitcher: Olsen (ND) 5IP 6H 4R 3ER 0BB 4K 1HR
Pitching Star: Holder (L, 0-2) 3⅔ IP 2H 1R 1ER 2BB 5K
Hitting Star #1: Moore 2-4, 2R, 2HR, 4RBI
Hitting Star #2: Rhinehart 2-4
Notes: Winston-Salem appeared to have tagged up too soon but the umps disagreed and refused the appeal, handing Trevor Holder and the P-Nats the loss, with a score of 5-4. Tyler Moore’s hot streak continued with the 22-year-old going deep twice for his 15th and 16th home runs of the season, driving in all four Potomac runs. Rehabbing Scott Olsen got the start and allowed four runs (three earned) on six hits (one home run) while striking out four. Holder came on in relief and finished the game, allowing just the lone run on two hits, walking two, and striking out five.

Hagerstown Suns, L, 13-4 vs. Asheville
Starting Pitcher: Hicks (L, 1-3) 4⅓ IP 5H 3R 3ER 5BB 2K
Pitching Un-Star #1: Vasquez 1⅔ IP 4H 3ER 2BB 1K
Pitching Un-Star #2: Morrison 1⅔ IP 7H 7R 5ER 1BB 3K 1HR
Hitting Star #1: Ramirez 1-3, R, BB, HR, 2RBI
Hitting Star #2: Bloxom 2-4, R, 2B, 2RBI
Notes: Thanks to eight runs in the seventh inning, Asheville was able to take a commanding lead and win the game, defeating the Suns by a score of 13-4. Stater Graham Hicks was credited with his 3rd loss of the season, allowing 3 runs over 4⅓ innings. Wanel Vasquez and Kyle Morrison came on in his relief, but failed miserably, collectively pitching just over 3 innings, but allowing 10 runs in the process. Highlight of the game for the Suns was J.P. Ramirez’s two-run homerun in the eighth inning. This was his 9th of the season.

Vermont Lake Monsters L, 11-7; W, 4-3 @ Connecticut
GAME ONE
Starting Pitcher: Jordan 3IP 8H 4R 4ER 1BB 1K
Pitcher Un-Star #1: McCatty (L, 2-2) 1⅔ IP 5H 4R 4ER 1BB 0K
Pitcher Un-Star #2: Herrera 1⅓ IP 4H 3R 3ER 1BB 0K
Hitting Star #1: Martinson 2-3, 2R, 2RBI
Hitting Star #2: Miller 1-2, R, 2RBI
Notes: Pitching took the game off as the Lake Monsters allowed 11 runs on 17 hits while striking out one (1) batter en route to an 11-7 loss to Connecticut. Starting pitcher Taylor Jordan got the no decision, and went three innings, allowing four runs on eight hits and a walk. Shane McCatty was credited with the loss, lasting only 1⅔ innings, allowing four runs of his own on five hits. Jason Martinson and Justin Miller were offensive players of the game, collectively going 3-5, scoring three runs, and getting four RBI.

GAME TWO
Starting Pitcher: McKenzie 3⅔ IP 4H 2R 2ER 3BB 7K
Pitching Star: Holland (W, 2-0) 3IP 1H 0R 1BB 3K
Hitting Star: Freitas 2-3, 2R, BB, HR, RBI
Notes: The Lake Monsters took advantage of some shoddy defense to score three times in the top of the 7th and split the doubleheader with a 4-3 win in the nightcap. Starter Chris McKenzie lasted just 3⅔ innings, allowing two runs on four hits and three walks, though he did strike out seven. Neil Holland got the win with three scoreless innings of relief, allowing one hit, one walk, and registering three strikeouts. David Freitas extended his hitting streak to 18 games by hitting safely in both games, a feat that ties the team record also held by Geoff Blum and Jason Tuttle.

GCL Nationals L, 4-1 @ GCL Mets
Starting Pitcher: Gregory Baez (L, 0-2) 4IP 5H 3R 3ER 1BB 3K
Pitching Star: Jimmy Barthmaier 3IP 0H 0R 0BB 0K
Hitting Star #1: Rick Hughes 1-3, R, 3B
Hitting Star #2: Andruth Ramirez 1-3, RBI
Notes: The GCL Mets pitchers allowed just one run on two hits while touching GCL Nationals starter Gregory Baez for three runs in the bottom of the 4th to erase an early 1-0 lead. Rick Hughes’ triple and Adruth Ramirez’s RBI single that followed comprised the entire G-Nats offense, as the G-Mets walked none and struck 10 and committed no errors.

DSL Nationals @ DSL Marlins — PPD
Notes: The D-Nats were rained out for the second time this week. This game will most likely be made up when the two teams meet again next Friday.

Syracuse Chiefs L, 10-7 @ Norfolk
Starting Pitcher: Jones (L, 1-5) 1IP 5H 5R 5ER 1BB 1HR
Pitching Star: English 2IP 1H 0R 1BB 2K
Hitting Star # 1: Ordaz 2-4, R, HR, RBI
Hitting Star # 2: Davis 1-4, R, HR, 2RBI
Notes: The Chiefs got into a big mess early as Norfolk scored five runs in the bottom of the 1st. But Norfolk wasn’t done there as they scored one more in the 2nd and thre more in the 3rd to take a 9-0 lead with only 4 innings played. Syracuse finally cut into that lead in the 5th with one run and in the 7th they got some momentum going as they scored two. Then in the 8th they added one more making it 10-4. In the 9th was the Chiefs last chance for a great comeback, but unfortunately they fell a bit short as they only managed to score three runs, losing this one 10-7. Starter Jason Jones went only one inning giving up five hits, five runs and one walk with the loss.

Harrisburg Senators W, 2-0 vs. New Britain
Starter/Pitching Star: Detwiler (W, 2-2) 7IP 5H 0R 1BB 7K
Pitching Star #2: Kimball (SV, 1) 1IP 1H 0R 1BB 2K
Hitting Star #1: Valdez 2-4, R
Hitting Star #2: Lowrance 1-3, R, HR, 2RBI
Notes: For the second straight game, the Harrisburg Senators blanked the New Britain Rock Cats by a score of 2-0. Marvin Lowrance matched Danny Espinosa’s feat from Tuesday, connecting on a two-run shot in the second inning to account for both runs. Starter Ross Detwiler evened his AA mark at 2-2 with his second straight scoreless outing, allowing five hits and one walk over seven innings. He also struck out seven.

Potomac Nationals L, 3-2 (8 inn.); W, 4-1 vs. Salem
GAME ONE
Starter/Pitching Star: Zimmermann 4IP 2H 0R 0BB 4K
Hitting Star #1: Johnson 3-4, 2B, SB
Hitting Star #2: Moore 2-3, BB
Notes: [The odd start time plus parental duties precluded Sue from seeing much of either game.] The offense generated 13 baserunners, but the clutch hit escaped the P-Nats yesterday, as the two runs were scored by a Mike Burgess home run and a wild pitch. Jordan Zimmermann made his fourth, and one would think, final rehab outing for Potomac striking out four and allowing two hits over four scoreless innings.

GAME TWO
Starting Pitcher: Rosenbaum (W, 1-0) 5IP 3H 1R 1ER 2BB 3K
Pitching Star: Leatherman (SV, 11) 2IP 2H 0R 0BB 2K
Hitting Star #1: Moore 2-3, 2R, 2B, HR, 2RBI
Hitting Star #2: Lombardozzi 2-4, SB
Notes: Danny Rosenbaum won his Carolina League debut with five innings pitched, one run allowed on three hits and two walks. He also struck out two. Sue’s take on his repetoire: “Had some difficulty locating his fastball and his curveball could use some dentures, but bore down when he needed to and got the key grounder off his sinker and a changeup that ‘drops off the table.’ Appears shorter than his listed 6’1″ but that could very well be an illusion created by his, um, sturdy carriage – a trait that appears highly valued by the Rizzo regime as a sign of durability”

Hagerstown Suns L, 13-10 @ Asheville
Starting Pitcher: Demny  3⅔ IP 5H 6R 6ER 3BB 1K
Pitching Un-Star: Graham (L, 1-1) 1⅔ IP 6H 4R 3ER 3K
Hitting Star #1: Kobernus 2-4, 2R, 2B, BB, HR, 5RBI
Hitting Star #2: Leon  2-3, 3R, 2B, 2BB
Notes: Hagerstown started the scoring with one in the top of the 1st which Asheville matched in the bottom of the inning. In the 2nd the Suns added four more, but Asheville wouldn’t give any breathing room to the Suns as they scored four runs in the 3rd to tie things back up. Hagerstown finally got a bit ahead in the 4th scoring two and they added one more in the next inning making it 8-6. They went on to add one more in the 6th to make it 9-6, unfortunately Asheville got hot and scored one in the 7th and four more in the 8th to make it 11-9. Hagerstown scored one run in the 8th but that was as close as they’d get as Asheville added two more runs in the bottom of the 8th to win this one 13-10. Starter Paul Demny went 3⅔ innings giving up five hits, six runs, three walks but got the no-decision.

Vermont Lake Monsters — PPD
Notes: The game at Connecticut was rained out today and will be made up Thursday as a doubleheader starting at 6:05 p.m. Vermont leads Connecticut by five games in the Stedler Division of the New York-Penn League.

GCL Nationals L, 6-3 vs. GCL Cardinals
Starting Pitcher: Matthew Grace 1⅔ IP 4H 2R 1ER 1BB 3K
Pitching Star: Pat Lehman 4IP 1H 0R 0BB 6K
Hitting Star #1: Hector Taveras 3-5, RBI
Hitting Star #2: Jeremy Mayo 2-4, R, HR, RBI
Notes: Matthew Grace stumbled in his GCL debut, allowing two first-inning runs and four hits overall in just 1⅔ innings as the GCL Cardinals doubled up the GCL Nationals 6-3. The G-Cards would extend their lead to 3-1 after seven innings before the G-Nats tied it at 3-3 in their half. Relievers Nick Serino and Tim Dupuis wilted in the ninth, allowing the game’s final three runs for the 6-3 count.

DSL Nationals W, 7-4 @ DSL Cubs2
Starting Pitcher: Wirkin Estevez (W, 5-3) 7IP 8H 4R 2ER 0BB 8K
Pitching Star: Inocencio Heredia (SV, 7) 1⅓ IP 1H 0R 0BB 1K
Hitting Star #1: “Smiley” Alvarez 3-4, 2R, 2B, BB, SB
Hitting Star #2: Paul Chacin 3-4, 2B, 4RBI
Hitting Star #3: Aderling Ruiz 2-4, 2RBI
Notes: Wirkin Estevez got his 5th win of the year with seven strong innings of work, lowering his ERA to 2.44 and striking out eight to pull within two of the league lead. The D-Nats were a respectable 5-for-15 with RISP, plating seven runs on 12 hits and stranding just four runners. The $1.6M sinkhole now known as Carlos Alvarez led the offense with a 3-for-4 effort, with two runs scored, a double, walk and a stolen base.

Starting Pitcher: Arnesen (W, 3-5) 6IP 1H 0R 0BB 3K
Pitching Star: Severino (H, 9) 1⅔ IP 0H 0R 0BB 0K
Hitting Star # 1: Ordaz 3-5, 2B, RBI
Hitting Star # 2: Whiting 2-4, 3R, BB, SB
Notes: The Chiefs started quick out of the gate scoring two runs in the top of the 1st and another four runs in the 2nd to give them a comfy lead to start things off. To add to their comfort starter Erik Arnesen went six innings giving up only a single hit with no runs and three strikeouts. In the 5th, Syracuse added one more run to add to their lead. Norfolk made an attempt to break the lead Syracuse had obtained by scoring four runs in the bottom of the 7th . But Syracuse proved too strong today as they added one more in the 8th to win this one 8-5.

Harrisburg Senators W, 2-0 vs. New Britain
Starting Pitcher: Thompson 6⅔ IP 3H 0R 1BB 7K
Pitching Star: Pena (W, 1-2) 1⅓ IP 0H 0R 0BB 2K
Hitting Star # 1: Castro 2-3, R
Hitting Star # 2: Espinosa 1-4, R, HR, 2RBI
Notes: Harrisburg and New Britain were having a battle of the pitchers throughout this one as starter Thompson went 6⅔ innings giving up only three hits, one walk and seven strikeouts. Finally in the 7th Harrisburg was able to break the tie with two runs scored which would be all the Sens would need to win this one 2-0. Special thanks goes to Danny Espinosa who hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the 7th to win it.

Potomac Nationals — PPD
Notes: There’s something about Salem and the rain as the skies opened up last night in Woodbridge to force a doubleheader tonight starting at 5:30 p.m. with Jordan Zimmermann slated to pitch game one, and Danny Rosenbaum to make his debut in game two.

Hagerstown Suns L, 7-6 @ Asheville (12 inn.)
Starting Pitcher: Bronson 5IP 8H 3R 3ER 1BB 4K 1HR
Pitching Star: Erb 1⅓ IP 0H 0R 1BB 2K
Hitting Star #1: Perez 3-5, R, 2B, 4SB
Hitting Star #2: Newsome 2-5
Notes: Dean Weaver’s struggles to close out ballgames continues as the 22-year-old blew his 7th save in 20 opportunities with two runs allowed in the bottom of the 8th against the Asheville Tourists. Since the All-Star break, he has gone 0-4 with a 7.71ERA and has allowed 12 runs in 11 appearances. Offensively, Eury Perez wreaked havoc on the basepaths, stealing four bases — second base twice, third base twice while going 3-for-5 at the plate. Evan Bronson started the game and went five innings, allowing three runs on eight hits and one walk, striking out four.

Vermont Lake Monsters X, x-x @ Connecticut
Starter/Pitching Star: Hansen (ND) 6IP 5H 1R 0ER 1BB 5K
Hitting Star #1: Freitas 2-4, 2B, RBI (hitting streak now 16 games)
Hitting Star #2: Martinson 1-2, R, 2BB
Notes: Connecticut started the scoring in the bottom of the 1st with one run, but Vermont answered back in the top of the 3rd with a run of their own, thanks to a David Freitas RBI double to tie things up at 1-1. The game remained scoreless until the the bottom of the 7th, when Connecticut broke the ice with the winning run as they went on to win this one 2-1. Starter Bobby Hansen went six innings giving up five hits, one unearned run and one walk, but got the no-decision while Colin bates took the loss with one run allowed over two innings pitched.

Syracuse Chiefs L, 4-0 @ Norfolk
Starting Pitcher: Mandel 7⅔ IP 6H 4R 3ER 2BB 5K
Pitching Star: None
Hitting Star: Whiting 2-4
Notes: The Chiefs couldn’t get much of anything going today as they were held to only five hits for the entire game. Norfolk scored one in the bottom of the 3rd and added another in the 6th. Norfolk added a few more to the scoreboard in the 8th to make it 4-0 which is how this one would end with Norfolk winning 4-0 over Syracuse. Starter Jeff Mandel went 7⅔ innings giving up six hits, 4 runs, two walks with five strikeouts and took the loss.

Harrisburg Senators W, 6-3 vs. New Britain
Starting Pitcher: Milone 6⅔ IP 6H 3R 3ER 1BB 4K

Notes: The Sens got down early in the 1st as New Britain scored two in the top of the inning. New Britain then added one more run in the 4th to make it 3-0. But the Sens got a spark from Danny Espinosa in the 5th as he homered over the right field wall to give the Sens their first run. Then in the 7th the Sens came out swinging, scoring five runs with the help of yet another homer by Espinosa making this a 6-3 game for the Sens. Starter Tom Milone went 6⅔ innings giving up six hits, three runs, one walk with four strikeouts. Chuck James got the win in relief while Zech Zinicola pitched a scoreless ninth for the save.

Vermont Lake Monsters — PPD
Notes: The Game versus Staten Island was postponed today due to wet grounds and will be made up in September as a doubleheader in Staten Island.

GCL Nationals W, 6-0 vs. GCL Marlns
Starter/Pitching Star #1: Kelvin Lopez 5IP 0H 0R 0BB 1K
Pitching Star #2: Christian Meza 3IP 1H 0R 0BB 4K
Hitting Star #1: Adrian Sanchez 2-5, 2R, 2B, RBI
Hitting Star #2: Wander Ramos 2-2, R
Notes: Three GCL Nationals pitchers combined for a one-hit shutout of the GCL Marlins. Almost as impressive: They issued no walks while striking out seven. Offensively, Adrian Sanchez led the 10-hit attack with a 2-for-5 afternoon, including a two-run single and a double. Starter Kelvin Lopez threw five no-hit innings to lower his ERA to 2.25.

DSL Nationals W, 4-2 @ DSL Orioles2

Notes: The DSL Nationals touched the DSL Orioles2 squad for three runs in the top of the 2nd and played error-free defense to cruise to a 4-2 win. Starter Antonio Guzman went seven strong innings, allowing both Orioles2 runs on four hits and three walks. He also struck out five. Jorge Hernandez struck out the side in the 9th for his 4th save.

Syracuse Chiefs W, 3-0 vs. Pawtucket
Starting Pitcher: Chico (W, 5-4) 7IP 3H 0R 1BB 3K
Pitching Star: Bergmann 1IP 0H 0R 0BB 1K
Hitting Star # 1: Orr 2-4, R, 2B, 2RBI
Hitting Star # 2: Davis 1-3, R, 2B
Notes: This game remained scoreless through 3½ innings until Syracuse finally broke the ice with three runs in the bottom of the 4th thanks to a doubles from Pete Orr and Pedro Lopez. The rest of the game was left up to the pitching staff, who combined for the shutout. Starter Matt Chico went seven innings giving up only three hits and one walk with three strikeouts. Then the relievers were able to keep things scoreless to give the Chiefs the win at 3-0.

Harrisburg Senators W, 13-4 vs. Altoona
Starting Pitcher: Kown (W, 4-4) 6IP 5H 2R 1ER 1BB 2K
Pitching Star: Walker 2IP 0H 0R 0BB 2K
Hitting Star # 1: Pahuta 3-4, R, 2B, 3RBI
Hitting Star # 2: Martinez 2-2, 2R, RBI
Notes: The Sens scored early in the bottom of the 2nd with one run, but Altoona didn’t let that lead last as they scored 1 in the top of the 3rd to tie things back up. In the 4th Altoona then took the lead in the 4th with another run making it 2-1. Harrisburg saw that one run and answered with two in the 6th and threw down another pair in the 7th to make it 5-2. Then in the bottom of the 8th the flood gates opened as the Sens bats became hot, scoring a whopping eight runs. Altoona, in their shocked state, could only answer with two runs in the 9th as Harrisburg took this one 13-4. Starter Andrew Kown went six innings giving up five hits, two runs, and one walk with the win that evened his AA record at 4-4.

Hagerstown Suns W, 7-2 vs. Rome
Starting Pitcher: Smoker (W, 3-9) 6IP 6H 1R 1ER 0BB 6K
Pitching Star: Graham 1IP 1H 0R 0BB 1K
Hitting Star # 1: Newsome 2-4, 2R, 2B, RBI
Hitting Star # 2: Perez 2-2, R, BB, 2SB, RBI
Notes: Hagerstown started things off in the bottom of the 1st with one run and followed up in the 3rd with five runs to put them up 6-0. Rome could only answer with one in the 4th, but the Suns were too strong today as they scored one more run in the 7th to go up 7-1 before the Braves got one back in the 9th for the 7-2 final. Starting pitcher Josh Smoker went six innings giving up six hits and one run (a home run) with 6 strikeouts for his third win of the season.

Potomac Nationals — OFF DAY
Notes: Potomac finishes up its seven-game homestand with three games against the Salem Red Sox. Jordan Zimmermann is slated to make his fourth rehab start, with Adrian Alaniz the most likely candidate to pitch out of the bullpen.

Vermont Lake Monsters L, 9-5 vs. Staten Island
Starting Pitcher: Swynenberg (L, 2-2) 4⅓ IP 8H 6R 6ER 1BB 3K 1HR
Pitching Star: Zellers 1IP 1H 0R 0BB 0K
Hitting Star #1: Martinson 2-5, R, 3B, RBI
Hitting Star #2: Freitas 1-4, 2B, 3RBI
Notes: A four-run fifth inning chased starter Matt Swynenberg from the game, down 6-0. Aaron Barrett didn’t fare much better, allowing three runs in the top of the sixth to put Staten Island up 9-0. Vermont responded with single runs in the 6th and 7th innings before breaking out in the bottom of the 8th with a three-run double by David Freitas, a hit that would extend his hitting streak to 14 games. But that’s as close as the Lake Monsters would get, falling by the count of 9-5.

GCL Nationals W, 7-6 @ GCL Astros
Starting Pitcher: Andruth Ramirez (W, 1-0) 9IP 10H 6R 3ER 2BB 8K
Starting Pitcher: Jason Marquis 3IP 2H 0R 0BB 4K
Pitching Star: Billy Ott 5IP 2H 0R 1BB 4K
Hitting Star #1: Adrian Sanchez 2-5, R, HR, 2RBI
Hitting Star #2: Jeremy Mayo 2-3, 2R, 2BB
Hitting Star #3: Randolph Oduber 2-4, RBI
Notes: Relievers? We don’t need no stinkin’ relievers. It was decidedly old-school baseball in Kissimmee yesterday as both starting pitchers went the distance, despite the 13 runs and 20 hits between the two teams. Andruth Ramirez weathered a six-run fourth inning and blanked the Astros over the last five innings to get the win.

UPDATE: With any luck, the intern that posted yesterday’s box score will be locked in the clubhouse with an endless-loop Justin Bieber CD playing while (s)he cleans the team’s supporters with a toothbrush. We’ve since learned that Jason Marquis made the start yesterday and, lo and behold, the GCL Astros also used some relievers. It does appear that the meat of the order (Nos. 3 through 6) did still collect seven of the ten hits, scored three runs and drove three runs. H/T to Jake Titleman39 for setting us straight.

DSL Nationals — OFF DAY
Notes: Jean Valdez doubled in a run and walked while Wirkin Estevez pitched a third of inning as the DSL American League All-Stars defeated the DSL National League All-Stars with a walkoff 4-3 win. The DSL Nationals resume the season today against the DSL Orioles2, their record at 21-19, four games behind the first-place DSL Yankees1 in the Boca Chica South Division.

Syracuse Chiefs L, 9-5 vs. Pawtucket
Starting Pitcher: Jones (L, 1-4) 3⅔ IP 7H 5R 4ER 1BB 2K 3HR
Pitching Star: Garate 1⅓ IP 0H 0R 1BB 3K
Pitching Un-star: Severino ⅔ IP 1H 4R 4ER 3BB 1K 1HR
Hitting Star #1: Whiting 3-5, R, 2B, BB, SB, RBI
Hitting Star #2: Bynum 2-3, R, 2BB, HR, 2RBI
Hitting Star #3: Burke 3-4, 2B
Notes: Jason Jones just couldn’t stop Pawtucket from scoring, allowing runs in every inning he started before being lifted with two outs, down 5-2. After a Boomer Whiting scored on a groundout after a bunt-single-turned-triple-via-error got the Chiefs within striking distance at 5-3 in the fifth, Atahualpa Severino served up four runs to the PawSox in just two-thirds of an inning to put the game out of reach.

Harrisburg Senators L, 3-0 vs. Altoona
Starting Pitcher: Detwiler (L, 1-2) 5IP 3H 2R 1ER 1BB 7K
Pitching Star: Carr 1IP 0H 0R 0BB 2K
Hitting Star #1: Marrero 2-4
Hitting Star #2: Baez 2-4
Notes: Ross Detwiler’s best effort at AA thus far was wasted on a night when the offense could only muster six hits. The lefthander went five innings and allowed two runs (one earned) on just three hits and one walk while striking out seven. He also helped out his own cause with a single in two at-bats.

Potomac Nationals W, 8-7 (10 inn.) vs. Kinston
Starting Thrower: Walker ⅔IP 1H 3R 3ER 4BB 2K
Pitching Star: Phillabaum 2⅓ IP 3H 0R 0BB 2K
Hitting Star #1: Moore 3-5, R, 2-2B, HR, 5RBI
Hitting Star #2: Norris 2-4, 2R, 2B, BB; two runners CS
Notes: Read more about how Kinston snatched defeat from the jaws of victory in Last Night In Woodbridge

Hagerstown Suns L, 6-5 vs. Rome
Starting Pitcher: Hicks (L, 1-2) 5⅓ IP 8H 6R 6ER 1BB 6K 2HR
Pitching Star: Garcia 2⅔ 1H 0R 1BB 3K
Hitting Star #1: Bloxom 1-3, R, HR, 3RBI
Hitting Star #2: Kobernus 1-3, 2R, BB
Notes: The longball was the undoing of Graham Hicks, who surrendered two last night, including a three-run shot as part of a four-run rally by the Rome Braves in the sixth inning. It also was the lion’s share of the Suns offense, as three of the five runs came on one swing by Justin Bloxom as Hagerstown managed to score five runs on just six hits, taking advantage of Rome’s five walks allowed. Francisco Soriano’s two errors pulled him into a second-place tie for the most errors in the Sally League with 32.

Vermont Lake Monsters L, 10-4 vs. Aberdeen
Starting Pitcher: Jordan (L, 1-1) 4⅔ IP 8H 6R 6ER 3BB 1K
Pitching Star: Cahill 1⅔ IP 0H 0R 1BB 2K
Hitting Star #1: Martinson 1-4, 2R, 3B, BB
Hitting Star #2: Labrie 0-1, 3BB
Notes: David Freitas’s RBI double in the bottom of the first extended his hitting streak to 13 games and gave the Lake Monsters an early 2-1 lead. That was the highlight for Vermont as the Aberdeen Ironbirds carpet-bombed Centennial Field with 15 hits en route to a 10-4 victory. Taylor Jordan started and went 4⅔ innings, giving up six runs on eight hits and three walks. He struck out just one.

GCL Nationals W, 14-8 (10 inn.) @ GCL Cardinals
Starting Pitcher: Jimmy Barthmaier 2IP 7H 5R 4ER 1BB 0K 1HR
Pitching Star: Pat Lehman (BS, 1) 3IP 4H 1R 0ER 0BB 3K
Hitting Star #1: Randolph Oduber 3-5, 4R, 2-2B, 3B, BB, 3RBI
Hitting Star #2: Adrian Sanchez 2-6, 2R, 2RBI
Hitting Star #3: Rick Hague 2-4, 2R, BB, SB
Notes: In a game that saw two ties and five lead changes, the GCL Nationals cranked out six runs in the top of the 10th to defeat the GCL Cardinals 14-8. The two-three-four batters of Rick Hague, Adrian Sanchez, and Randolph Oduber combined for seven hits, three walks and five RBIs to pace the GCL offense. Jimmy Bathmaier was ineffective in his third game since the Nationals signed him, coughing up five runs on seven hits over just two innings.

Starting Pitcher: Atilano (L, 2-1) 2⅓ IP 7H 5R 5ER 3BB
Pitching Star: Balester 1IP 0H 0ER 0BB 1K
Hitting Star #1: Davis 3-4, 2B, RBI
Hitting Star #2: Whiting 1-3, 2BB
Notes:  Although he was impressive in his other starts, Luis Atliano did not have the same command as he earned his first AAA loss of the season, lasting only 2 1/3 innings, allowing 5 runs off seven hits and three walks. Pawtucket would later score another three runs, winning by a score of 8-2. Arnesen also had a rough game, lasting just 3⅔ innings, allowing 2 runs (1 earned) off 4 hits. He did, however, have an impressive K/BB ratio, as he struck out 3, while walking none. The offensive star of the game was Leonard Davis, who went 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI.

Harrisburg Senators W, 9-7 vs. Altoona
Starting Pitcher: Thompson 6IP 5H 3R 3ER 1BB 3K 1HR
Pitching Un-Star: Kimball (BS, 3) 1IP 2H 3R 3ER 2BB 0K 1HR
Pitching Star: Zinicola (W, 2-3) 1IP 0H 0R 0BB 2K
Hitting Star #1: Valdez 3-5, 2R, BB, 2HR, 6RBI
Hitting Star #2: Lowrance 2-3, 3R, 2BB
Notes:  The Senators got to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning and scored two more in the third inning thanks to a home run by Jesus Valdez to take an early 5-0 lead. However, after Thomspson gave up 3 runs in the sixth inning, Cole Kimball came into the game, and unfortunately, could not hold on to the win either, as he also allowed three runs in just one inning. Altoona took a 7-5 lead to the bottom of the ninth. However, the Sens fought back to score four runs to win the game. It began with a Chris Marrero walk, a Brad Coon single, then a wild pitch that put both runners in scoring position, Danny Espinosa then hit a sac fly to plate Marrero to make it 7-6. Marvin Lowrance then walked ahead of Valdez’s second home run, a three-run shot that gave the Senators an exciting walkoff win homered for the second time in the game, his seventh of the year, which scored three and gave the Senators a very exciting walk-off win at 9-7.

Potomac Nationals W, 5-1 vs. Kinston
Starting Pitcher: Morris (W, 2-2) 5IP 2H 0R 0BB 5K
Pitching Star: Leatherman (SV, 9) 1⅓ IP 0H 0R 0BB 2K
Hitting Star #1: Moore 2-3, 2R, 2B, HR, BB, RBI
Hitting Star #2: Johnson 2-4, R, 2-2B, RBI
Notes: An antsy eight-year-old allowed Sue just two innings in Woodbridge, but here what she saw from A.J. Morris, who evened his Potomac record at 2-2 with five scoreless innings: “Much better control, a little more velocity. Better separation between fastball and breaking pitches. Hence, Morris striking out the side in the first.”

Hagerstown Suns L, 9-6 vs. Rome
Starting Pitcher: Demny (L, 6-3) 4⅓ IP 6H 6R 6ER 2BB 5K 1HR
Pitching Star: Arnold 1⅔ IP 2H 0R 0BB 2K
Hitting Star #1: Bloxom  3-4, R, RBI
Hitting Star #2: Newsom 2-4, 2RBI
Hitting Star #3: Kobernus 2-4, 2R, SB
Notes: The Suns got down early as Rome scored four runs in the top of the 1st , Hagerstown could only answer with one run in the bottom of the inning. In the 3rd the Suns scored four runs to take the lead 5-4, unfortunately that lead was short-lived as Rome scored two runs in the 5th, and another two in the 7th to go up 8-5. The Suns were able to score 1 in the bottom of the 7th but that was all they could do in this one as Rome scored more In the 8th to take this one 9-6. Starter Paul Demny went 4⅓ innings giving up six hits (one home run), six runs (all earned) and 2 walks with the loss.

Vermont Lake Monsters W, 7-6 vs. Aberdeen
Starting Pitcher: McKenzie 3⅔ IP 5H 5R 2ER 1BB 5K
Pitching Star: Barrett 2IP 2H 0R 0BB 4K
Hitting Star #1: Freitas 3-5, 2B, RBI
Hitting Star #2: Moldenhauer 2-3, BB, 2RBI
Hitting Star #3: Moore 2-4, 2R, SB, RBI
Notes: Vermont began the scoring in the bottom of the 1st with one run, while Aberdeen came back in the 3rd with 1 of their own. Aberdeen then scored 4 more runs in the top of the 4th to make it 5-1. But the Lake Monsters wouldn’t give up, scoring single runs in the 4th and 5th innings to whittle the lead down to 5-3. Vermont then reclaimed the lead in the 6th with three runs scored, making it 6-5. In the top of the 9th Aberdeen squared things up at 6-6 which made it look like extras, but the IronBirds handed it right back to Vermont in the bottom half of the inning. A single by Wade Moore and a hit batsmen set up first-and-second with nobody out. An error on the ensuing sacrifice by Connor Row sent home Moore for the 7-6 tally. Christopher McKenzie started the game and went 3⅔ innings and allowed five runs (two earned) on five hits and a walk while striking out five.

GCL Nationals — OFF DAY
Notes: The GCL Nationals, in last place at 7-13, resume play on the road in Jupiter against the second-place GCL Cardinals before finishing the week at home versus the third-place GCL Mets.

DSL Nationals L, 11-3 vs. DSL Mets1
Starting Pitcher: Silvio Medina (L, 2-3) ⅓ IP 5H 6R 6ER 1BB 0K
Pitching Star: Luis Matos 2IP 1H 0R 2BB 1K
Hitting Star: Jean Valdez 2-4, R, BB, RBI
Notes: Starting pitcher Silvio Medina could get out of the first inning, as the DSL Mets1 squad smacked him around for six runs on five hits and a walk. He left with two on but the bullpen didn’t add to his misery (i.e. that damage was all his doing). Wander Suero, Jorge De La Cruz, Dennis Lellis followed Medina and the trio were just as ineffective, allowing eight more hits, five more runs, and issuing four more walks. Offensively, Jean Valdez led the seven-hit effort with two singles, a walk, and an RBI.
